FIA Formula 2 Championship
The Imola Circuit wasn’t a happy hunting ground for any of the Aussies in action over the weekend with Jack Doohan and Calan Williams both having tough outings.
Doohan started off stronger of the two, snatching a second row start during qualifying, while a less than ideal setup for Williams saw him all the way down in P20.
When it came to the opening sprint race, Doohan started in eighth but couldn’t make up any positions, instead dropping out of the top 10 towards the end of the race to finish eleventh.
Williams on the other hand, made up five spots in a circuit known for difficult passes to finish 14th.
It was a similar story for the Western Australian in the feature race as he again made up positions throughout the race, but could only finish as a high as P15 – headway made during a strong start lost when he was forced to avoid a slow car.
As for Doohan, his weekend went from bad to worse as he had a collision with his 2022 Formula 3 Championship title rival in Dennis Hauger – the two coming together just after lights out and the Queenslander out of the race.
It’s another month between races now with the next FIA Formula 2 Championship round on 22-24 May in Barcelona.
ADAC Formula 4 Championship
James Wharton has had a mixed weekend in his European Formula 4 debut after taking part in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship season opener at Spa-Francorchamps.
The Ferrari Driver Academy youngster started well and qualified in the top 10 for both of the category’s qualifying sessions with fifth and eighth respectively.
Unfortunately he had a horrible start in the opening race of the weekend and was forced to retire, however he turned his fortunes around in the second race of the weekend – grabbing a podium from P8.
In Sunday’s sole reverse grid race, lots of traffic at the start halted Wharton’s progress up the field and the Victorian was unable to move up from sixth, instead losing out some positions to eventually cross the line in ninth.
The next round of the German F4 Championship will be at the famous Hockenheimring on 14-15 May.
Nürburgring Endurance Series
Caitlin Wood enjoyed an impressive individual performance in the 53. Adenauer ADAC Rundstrecken-Trophy, the second round of the 2022 Nürburgring Endurance Series.
Once again behind the wheel of the Adrenalin Motorsport BMW 330i in the VT2 class, Wood got her chance to drive in the second stint of the four hour race.
Driving alongside Alex Toth-Jones and Julian Hanses, Wood had plenty of work to do when she finally got in the car and worked her way up a few positions.
While it was a gallant effort where she produced a number of solid lap times, Wood could only do so much handing the car over to another teammate, who finished fifth in class.
