Celebrating NAIDOC Week

Monday 04 July, 2022
“There is plenty of work still to be done in this space and through our ongoing work in the diversity and inclusion space, we are committed to seeing more people enjoy more motorsport more often.” - Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca

Motorsport Australia is encouraging its members to support NAIDOC Week, with this year’s theme ‘Get up! Stand up! Show up!’.

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca said it was important everyone in motorsport continued to support the wider Indigenous community.

“NAIDOC Week is a fantastic initiative and I’d encourage all our members and motorsport fans to find events taking place this week near them that celebrate the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders,” Arocca said.

“And of course, it’s important that we continue to strive to be better year round. Through wonderful initiatives like the Racing Together program, we can highlight that motorsport is a sport that is open to everyone and a sport where everyone can compete on a level playing field.

“There is plenty of work still to be done in this space and through our ongoing work in the diversity and inclusion space, we are committed to seeing more people enjoy more motorsport more often.”

The Repco Supercars Championship previously held its inaugural Indigenous Round at Darwin late last month, with teams showcasing impressive racing liveries at the Hidden Valley event.

Meanwhile, the Racing Together project is designed to identify and then assist suitable candidates from a cohort of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youths of both genders, in the 12 to 16 years age group, and provide them with an opportunity to pursue a career in our sport, as either a driver or a member of a race team.

Motorsport Australia continues to back the program, created by Motorsport Australia’s FIA Delegate Garry Connelly and his wife, Monique.
