Motorsport Australia’s first ever Introduction to Motorsport Program for women in Queensland has been a major success.

A sold-out field of 24 women participated in the event at Norwell Motorplex, which was targeted at introducing them to motorsport and helping build their confidence and skill in a car.

The program, which was the first of its kind in Queensland, featured a mixture of theory workshops and practical activities in a car, helping them understand the ins and outs of motorsport, as well as teaching the basic skills of driving.

Starting off with a briefing, the participants went through a scrutineering workshop with Motorsport Australia officials before getting behind the wheel of a car for some driving exercises.

The activities saw the women learn car control and complete further exercises on the skid pan, before the participants put their newfound skills to the test in a motorkhana which was timed.

With two timed motorkhana sessions taking place across the day, the fastest driver in the morning was Hayley Shields, while Rochelle Bell was fastest in the afternoon – the latter highly impressive in her runs as she posted identical times on multiple occasions.

The program also saw participants buddied up with individuals experienced in motorsport, with the women using their knowledge and experience to help guide the newcomers.

The participants were also treated to a special talk during lunch, with Supercars content creator Charlie Barlow speaking to experienced racing driver Melinda Price.
