James Piszcyk and Patrick Heuzenroeder are the latest Australians to make a move overseas after the duo were confirmed as starters for the 2023 British Formula 4 Championship.
Both Piszcyk and Heuzenroeder are some of the first drivers to secure a place for next year’s massive 10-round season in the UK, with Piszcyk to race for Hitech Grand Prix Team and Heuzenroeder for Phynsis by Argenti.
It’s been a busy year for Piszcyk are Heuzenroeder as both drivers were part of September’s Ferrari Driver Academy Asia-Pacific and Oceania regional selection program where they made it to the final six.
Although neither progressed to the World Scouting Finals last month, they had been impressive enough to get attention from race teams outside of Australia.
Piszcyk will enter the British championship with slightly more experience in open-wheel racing than Heuzenroeder, with the 16-year-old having had a successful stint in the Australian Formula Ford Championship this year.
Having been an overall leader and serious contender for the national title throughout 2022 thanks to four wins and a further six podiums, Piszcyk was in line to win the champinship but sacrificed his title aspirations to test with Silverstone-based Hitech ahead of his F4 debut.
Despite missing out on winning the championship, Piszcyk was content with his decision to turn his focus to next year’s new challenge.
“It’s a great opportunity for me to race in a championship as strong as ROKiT British F4, and join the championship-winning Hitech GP team,” Piszcyk said
“It’s going to be great to battle and challenge a competitive grid of drivers, and I’m really excited to embark on my next chapter in racing.”
With Piszcyk to join up with the team at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix later this year, Hitech’s F4 Team Manager Dominic Stott was looking forward to welcoming Piszcyk alongside British driver Will Macintyre and Kanato Le from Japan.
“It’s great to be able to welcome Jim to the team for Abu Dhabi later this month and the 2023 season,” Stott said.
“It’s a big commitment to make the move across the pond and this is the ideal next step for him to progress. He is used to racing at the front now and that’s what we aim to continue.
“Having Jim onboard is another sign of where we aim to be in the new year.”
Like Piszcyk, Heuzenroeder also elected to miss the final round of the NSW Formula Ford Championship for British F4 testing.
Having impressed Phynsis by Argenti in both testing and in his efforts at Sepang International Raceway as part of the Ferrari Driver Academy Asia-Pacific Scouting Program, the 16-year-old was given the green light to compete next year - a challenge he was looking forward to.
“I’m feeling optimistic about the move to British F4 with Phinsys by Argenti. I think it will be a good season,” Heuzenroeder told British F4.
“They’re a great team and have proven what they’re capable of with their previous results. I’ve enjoyed testing and already feel like I have a good relationship with the team members.
“I know that they will give it everything next year, as will I. My goal, like any other driver on the grid, is to win the championship, but ultimately, I want to make sure all mine and the teams’ hard work pays off and that we can get the best results possible.”
Next year will mark a landmark season for the British Formula 4 Championship, which will headlined by a maiden appearance at the iconic Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit.
The 2023 season begins with the first of two rounds at Donington Park on 22-23 April.
