Spanish Formula 4 Championship

The 2022 Spanish Formula 4 Championship season has come to a close with four Australians competing in the final round at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Leading the Australian charge was Hugh Barter, who secured second place on the overall season standings thanks to two podiums, while Marcos Flack, Noah Lisle and Gianmarco Pradel were the other Aussies racing.

With the championship already won by Bulgarian Nicola Tsolov, Barter could only finish as high as second and although he had a less than ideal start, the Victorian managed to salvage some good results.

In the first qualifying session, the 17-year-old ended up third overall with four hundredths of a second separating the top four, before a slow start off the line in race one saw Barter bumped from behind and fall to fifth – a position he stayed in for the rest of the race.

In the weekend’s middle race, Barter started in second and finished in second with a consistent run, before producing his best performance in the final race of the year.

After a disappointing qualifying where he ended up eighth, Barter worked his way up the field to finish on the podium – his 13th for the year.

Unfortunately, the other three Aussies weren’t able to get in the points in any of the three races, with Flack’s best result being a P16 in the final race of the round.

Lisle’s best finish was also a P16, which came in the opening race, while Pradel’s first F4 Championship round since the Ferrari Driver Academy Scouting World Finals saw him claim two top 20 finishes with 18th in the second race his best.

Porsche Sprint Challenge Middle East

Harri Jones has enjoyed an impressive debut in the opening round of the 2022/2023 Porsche Sprint Challenge Middle East season.

Taking place at Bahrain International Circuit, Jones was one of 19 drivers competing in the two-race season opener and picked up two top 10 finishes despite it being his first time at the circuit.

Racing for BWT Junior Racing, the Queenslander hit the ground running and posted the second fastest time in practice two before grabbing a front row start in qualifying.

Unfortunately, Jones endured a difficult run in the opening race of the weekend, dropping down to P7 after a minor incident.

The 2022 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Champion was not deterred though as he bounced back in the final race of the weekend to charge up the field and claim a well deserved second place.

As a result of his podium, Jones ended the round in fourth place and just four points off the two drivers ahead.

The next round of the series will be in December at Bahrain, while the 23-year-old’s focus is now on the Porsche Junior Shootout in Spain later this month.
