Supercars grid almost set for 2023
Friday 18 November, 2022
The 2023 Repco Supercars Championship grid is almost set with the final available seat now snapped up by Cameron Hill.
Becoming the first Canberra-based Supercars driver since Dale Bred in 2004, Hill’s stellar rise up the ranks has seen him rewarded with the last remaining seat on the 2023 grid - Todd Hazelwood’s vacated seat at Matt Stone Racing.
The 25-year-old will team up with Jack Le Brocq to drive the team’s second Chevrolet Camaro in his debut season.
Having started off in karting where he won the National Pro Junior (KF3) Australian Championship in 2012, Hill’s next big title came in 2015 when he won 12 races to claim the Australian Formula Ford Championship.
A successful two-season stint in the popular Toyota 86 Racing Series, where he claimed second and third, was then followed by his third national title when he won the Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia Championship last year.
In 2022, Hill made the move to the Dunlop Super2 Series where he currently sits fourth ahead of the final round of the season.
In addition to his debut Super2 campaign, Hill also won a thrilling Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour in April, before driving for Premiair Racing alongside Chris Pither in the Repco Bathurst 1000.
“It has been a goal of mine for years to compete at the highest level here in Australia,” Hill said.
“We have massive potential here at MSR. The team has been building towards Gen3 for some time now. Everyone will have brand new cars, and I see it as a big opportunity for myself and the team to make an impact. It’s the first time the playing field will have been level for years.
“I am grateful that Matt and the team see my potential and are giving me this opportunity.”
Owner/CEO of Matt Stone Racing, Matt Stone, was pleased to welcome Hill to the team.
“It’s exciting to have another rookie in the fold here at MSR. And in Cam, we see a lot of great potential with the experiences and success that he has had in multiple categories over the past few years,” Stone said.
“I think he is the perfect fit for the changing dynamic that comes with Gen3.”
With 25 cars making up the 2023 grid, all but three seats are 100 per cent locked in with Brad Jones Racing’s Bryce Fullwood, Jack Smith and Macauley Jones yet to confirm their place, although all three are likely to stay.
Hill and Le Brocq will drive two of 15 Chevrolet Camaros part of the grid, while there will be 10 Ford Mustangs making up the field.
The 2023 Repco Supercars Championship will commence on the Newcastle streets on 4-6 March, while the 2022 season will wrap up with the returning Adelaide 500 on 2-4 December.
