Sprite Club reaches 60 Years

Thursday 08 December, 2022
After two years of delays, the Sprite Car Club of Australia Inc (SCCA) will finally get to celebrate its 60th anniversary this weekend.

While originally scheduled for 2020, COVID-19 put a significant delay on the event, forcing the club to hold off until this year.

Despite being delayed, the event will continue as planned with many of the original plans to remain as part of the celebration, which will run in conjunction with its Annual General Meeting and Christmas party.

Formed in November 1960 in Sydney, the club was created as a ‘one make’ club as a result of the popularity of the then recently introduced Austin Healey ‘Bugeye’ Sprite.

At its formation, the club decided to become a member of Motorsport Australia, then known as CAMS.

It initially joined as an associate member before resolving to become a fully affiliated voting member- a status it has held for the past 62 years.

With its claim to fame being that it’s the oldest Sprite club in the world, one that has not been effectively challenged, the club has long looked after its members for more than six decades.

Right from its formation, the SCCA had a range of activities to give members enjoyment of the popular sports car, which included gymkhanas, economy runs, trials later to be known as rallies, inter club challenges and lap dashes at Warwick Farm and Amaroo for the more spirited budding circuit racers.

It also organised a variety of social activities throughout the years – adding to its accessibility of all members.

It now has a membership of more than 300 members, and while it has since included a wide variety of cars, no longer making it a one make club, it does continue to give great credence to the ‘Bugeye’ Sprite and its long list of derivatives.

The SCCA will celebrate its special 60-year anniversary in the Lakeside Restaurant at the Sydney International Regatta Centre on 11 December.
