The Motorsport Australia New South Wales Motorkhana Championship begins this weekend with an impressive line-up competing in the season opener.
Run by the Westlakes Automobile Club at its home location in Awabac Park, the event will see some of the state’s best motorkhana competitors go head-to-head over nine challenging tests.
Headlining the entry list is 2022 Motorsport Australia Motorkhana champion Aaron Wuillemin, who enters having won not just last year’s state motorkhana championship, but also the national khanacross championship.
A regular competitor at NSW State events, Wuillemin will be looking to continue his purple patch of form.
With entries still coming through, multiple national and state champion Corinne East-Johnston and Phillip East are expected to join the field, which will add to the highly competitive field.
Outside of the national contenders, David Wykes leads the charge of local drivers and is the most likely to offer Wuillemin a run for his money.
Westlakes Automobile Club President Ben Semple was looking forward to getting the state championship underway and was hopeful for a big year.
“We’re super keen to get into it. We have a good field and the event is in good shape, so fingers crossed the weather treats us better this year. It’s hot and sunny this weekend – so we’re happy with that,” Semple said.
“We had more than 60 per cent of events rained out last year, it was almost worse than COVID, so we’re hopeful this weekend can be the start of something massive.
“As for the entry list, it’s great to have Aaron already locked in, so we will wait to see Corrine and Phil come to give him a challenge.
“We see Aaron fairly regularly at our events, and I am sure he will be at our khanacross next week, which makes it a busy little period for us.
“Corinne and Phil in particular are also quite good like that, they go to grassroots events around the country, so it’s wonderful to see their commitment to the sport and we’re rapt they continue to come to our events.
“I am hoping David (Wykes) will also give Aaron and the others a run for his money – there is nothing better than seeing one of our go hard against one of the best drivers in the country, so it makes it very interesting.
“Spectating is free, the grounds are looking good and it’s just exciting around the club - so, bring on the weekend.”
