Repco Supercars Championship
The Repco Supercars Championship had just one race on Sunday with Broc Feeney dominating the affair to pick up his first win of the season.
Feeney took out the win having started from pole position, beating Andre Heimgartner and Brodie Kostecki in the weekend’s final round.
The final race of the Beaurepaires Melbourne SuperSprint was far less eventful then the previous three, as it started under the safety car and involved no major incidents.
There were still some notable talking points as Bryce Fullwood, who was in contention for a podium, received a 15-second penalty for an unsafe release.
Fullwood’s penalty saw him plummet down the order to 18th as Shane van Gisbergen and Jack Le Brocq rounded out the top five.
Although he didn’t win the race, Kostecki came away with the Beaurepaires Melbourne Supersprint’s Larry Perkins Trophy, having featured on the podium in all four races with two wins himself.
Kostecki’s performance across the weekend also saw him gain the championship lead for the first time in his career as Chaz Mostert ended up in 14th.
The championship lead also sees Erebus Motorsport take the teams’ championship lead for the first time in its history.
The Repco Supercars Championship continues at the end of this month with the Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint at CARCO.com.au Raceway on 28-30 April.
FIA Formula 2 Championship
After a highly disappointing Saturday DNF, Jack Doohan put on an impressive display in the Formula 2 Championship’s feature race – finishing eighth overall.
A wet and wild Qualifying saw Doohan start the feature race in P15, giving the Queenslander plenty of work to do throughout the 33-lap race.
Just like every session across the weekend, there was plenty of drama to occur throughout the race as Doohan navigated through the trouble on an alternate strategy.
Having charged up four places in the opening five laps, Doohan enjoyed a battle with Jak Crawford three laps later with the American ending up in the wall as a result of Doohan’s pressure – but through no fault of the Australian.
Doohan’s consistency was rewarded as a number of drivers ahead of him had major incidents which saw him bumped up the field – Roy Nissany going into the wall and Dennis Hauger going off track.
Eighth place marked a solid recovery for Doohan, who picked up his third top 10 finish for the season, yet he unfortunately fell out of the overall top 10 Championship standings.
Currently on 24 points, Doohan sits 34 points behind championship leader Ayumu Iwasa ahead of the next round at Baku on 28-30 April.
FIA Formula 3 Championship
Christian Mansell was the only one of the three Aussie FIA Formula 3 Championship drivers to score points on what was a challenging weekend on home soil.
Scoring ninth and the fastest lap on Saturday in a shortened race, Mansell picked up just the one point in Saturday’s feature race.
It was a busy race for the Newcastle driver who was involved in an incident with Sebastián Montoya on the opening lap which saw the Spaniard out of the race.
The incident-filled affair had a handful of safety car interventions with eight drivers not finishing the race, while a few DNFs helped Mansell up into 11th place by the time the chequered flag was waved.
Although crossing the line in P11, Mansell was elevated to 10th post-race as Dino Beganovic was handed a 10-second penalty, dropping Beganovic to 13th.
Tommy Smith was the other driver to benefit from Beganovic’s collision with Caio Collet – with the Victorian’s season-best result of 13th being adjusted to 12th.
Throughout the race, Smith had made plenty of ground and showcased his experience at Albert Park having started in 28th position.
Not only did Smith gain from the eight DNFs, but some clever racing and solid pace saw him make up seven places on his own accord.
Fellow Victorian Hugh Barter had a weekend to forget as he could only manage to finish the feature in 15th.
The FIA Formula 3 Championship season continues next month at Imola on 19-21 May.
