Toparis enjoys memorable GB3 debut

Costa Toparis made his GB3 debut on the weekend.

GB3

Costa Toparis has made a good start to his international open-wheel career, finishing his GB3 debut equal 10th in the overall standings.

Having gone straight into the rebranded BRDC British Formula 3 Championship after being scouted by Rodin Carlin last year, the teenager had a mixed weekend in the season opener at Oulton Park.

The newly turned 16-year-old showed plenty of promise during the round’s practice sessions before setting the eighth and 12th fastest times in the double qualifying session.

Unfortunately, he failed to finish the opening race after he was one of three cars unable to avoid a crash ahead of them, resulting in a DNF and a P22 classification.

Starting from the fourth row in the round’s second race, Toparis enjoyed a consistent run in the wet weather as he made up one position to finish seventh and score his first points of the season.

Although he gained the one position in the second race, he picked up much more in the third and final outing as he reached the chequered flag eight places higher than where he started finishing sixth, as well as avoiding a big crash that saw a number of others retire.

By the end of the weekend, Toparis banked 33 points towards his tally and finished just 20 points off teammate Callum Voisin, who was third overall.

The next round of the GB3 season will be at Silverstone Circuit on 6-7 May.

SuperSport Endurance Cup

Bart Horsten began a new chapter in his motorsport career with a victory in the opening round of the 2023 SuperSport Endurance Cup.

Driving alongside Keir McConomy in the Geoff Steel Racing BMW 1 series, Horsten was instrumental in bringing the car home in top spot out of a talented 33-car field.

With the round taking place at Snetterton Circuit, the duo proved quite dominant across the weekend, which began with securing pole position by more than one second.

The duo then enjoyed a comfortable win as they were on the lead lap throughout the race and took out top honours by almost half a minute over Pro B class winner Julian McBride, while Paul and Luke Browes rounded out the podium a further 15 seconds off the runner-up.

With the three podium getters the only crews to complete 52 laps of the circuit, Horsten and McConomy were never really seriously challenged throughout the two-hour race.

The next round of the SuperSport Endurance Cup will be at Silverstone Circuit on 19-21 May.
