Oscar Piastri has enjoyed his second Formula 1 career-points finish after rounding out the top 10 in a challenging, yet entertaining Monaco Grand Prix.
It was a highly impressive performance from the Victorian as he cruised behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris for most of the 78-lap race before snatching 10th place in the rain-affected final stint.
Piastri’s strong result came off the back of a solid qualifying session where he finished 11th and missed out on Q3 by just three hundredths of a second.
When it came to Sunday’s race, Piastri opted for the hard tyres and escaped any issues during the busy start before producing a solid run for a large portion of the race.
The 22-year-old stayed out on hards until the rain began to fall over the iconic streets of Monte Carlo when he was brought in to switch to Inters along with the majority of the field.
Initially gaining a place on Norris, who had to make a second stop behind the Aussie, Piastri couldn’t hold off his teammate for much longer as he dropped back out of the top 10 entering the final stint.
However brake issues for Yuki Tsunoda allowed Norris and Piastri to make an easy pass on the Japanese driver as the both McLaren drivers then pushed on to a double points finish.
Although it was a straightforward run to his second points finish in Formula 1, Piastri was pleased with how he navigated the challenging conditions.
“I don’t think there were any touches, but some very, very close moments, especially when we were on the slicks,” Piastri explained.
“One time, I got keyed up on the radio to talk and almost put it on the wall mid-sentence. I won’t do that next time. But yeah, a few close calls.
“The race itself was probably the most tricky of the year as well.
“These are the weekends where you learn the most … I don’t think it gets too much harder than Monaco in the rain on slicks. So yeah, happy with that.”
And it was during the chaotic period of rain where Piastri found himself following reigning champion Max Verstappen, who went on to win the race ahead of Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon.
The podium trio finished where they started the Grand Prix having being involved in one of the most exciting Monaco qualifying sessions in recent years – Verstappen edging out Alonso by less than a tenth after a remarkable third sector on his final flying lap.
Verstappen’s win sees him move further ahead of teammate Sergio Perez on the Championship standings, while Piastri has now locked in five points, leapfrogging Valtteri Bottas to P13.
The FIA Formula 1 World Championship continues this weekend with the Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on 4 June.
