Piszcyk claims maiden F4 win

Monday 05 June, 2023
Jimmy Piszcyk won the opening race of the British F4 Championship round on the weekend.

British F4

The British F4 Championship turned green and gold over the weekend with James Piszcyk and Noah Lisle both picking up wins at the Thruxton Circuit.

Of the two though, it was Piszcyk who enjoyed the best weekend, which started off in an immensely close qualifying session when he posted the second fastest time to secure a front row start alongside Hitech teammate Will Macintyre.

The South Australian then snatched top spot from the polesitter early on and held the lead for the rest of the race. Despite enduring heavy pressure from Macintyre, he was able to notch up his first F4 career victory.

In addition to the win, Piszcyk picked up an extra championship point for fastest lap in the process.

While he was unable to pick up another win over the weekend, he was highly impressive behind the wheel – especially in the reverse grid race where he was able to move his way up five places to finish in 15th, while Lisle notch up his victory.

After a troubled qualifying and a DNF in the opening race, Lisle had a dream start to the reverse grid race as it took him only two corners to work his way through from fourth on the grid and to the lead.

From there, it was plain sailing for Lisle until a safety car was deployed with only nine minutes remaining in the race. But the restart didn’t faze Lisle, holding his lead and crossing the line with a one-second advantage over his closest competitor.

In the final race, it was Piszcyk who had the better result of the two after running fourth for the majority of the race before being passed late on to come fifth, while Lisle was unable to crack the top 15

Unfortunately, the third Aussie in Patrick Heuzenroeder had a weekend to forget after he failed to finish the first two races before crossing the line behind Lisle in the final race.

Only seven points separate Lisle and Piszcyk on the standings after four rounds with the former in sixth and the latter in seventh.

The next round of the British F4 Championship will take place at Oulton Park on 17-18 June.

GB3 Championship

Aussie rookie Costa Toparis found some strong pace during the third round of the GB3 Championship over the weekend.

While the results on paper weren't as flattering, Toparis was within one second of pole position during qualifying and found himself in some intriguing battles for a top 10 finish in all three races.

A P10 finish in the opening race had the teenager eager to score more points, but unfortunately, he dropped to 13th in the second race to set up another battle for places in the third and final race of the weekend.

A top 10 finish wasn’t meant to be though as Toparis made up places but lost his advantage in the slipstream on multiple occasions, eventually crossing the line in P12.

Toparis' position on the standings has taken a slight hit as he now sits in 10th place and of the next round of the GB3 Championship at Snetterton on 17-18 June.

NTT Indycar Series

Aussie Will Power has found himself on the podium on the streets of Detroit after surviving a near-race-ending clash.

The 2022 NTT Indycar Series Champion found himself vying for the lead with Alex Palou throughout the majority of the race, with the two comfortably leading into the first round of pit stops.

Palou's four second lead was cut short when a safety car was deployed towards the half way point of the race, where Power was able to take the lead, before again losing it when his soft tyres began to wear.

Another safety car late on is what led to Scott Dixon locking up and sending Power airborne on the restart, almost ending his race in an instant.

Power was able to recover nicely, finding his way back to second place which is where he would ultimately finish.

Power now moves to eighth in the standings and just three points behind Team Penkse teammate Scott McLaughlin, with the three-time Supercars champion having started where Power finished in second before crossing the line  seventh.

The next round of the NTT Indycar Series will take place in Wisconsin on 18 June.

Baja 500

Australian Kevy Nott has completed one of the toughest motorsport events in the world at the famous Baja 500 last weekend.

In what was an impressive performance, the Queenslander finished 126th overall – a huge accomplishment considering the likelihood of a DNF in such a difficult event.

Not only that, but he finished fourth in his class of nine, with five of the competitors not even making it to the end of the race.

GT World Challenge Europe

It was a difficult day for the Aussies competing in the GT World Challenge Europe over the weekend with all three failing to finish the Circuit Paul Ricard 1000km.

In what was the second endurance race of the year, Calan Williams, Ricky Capo and Alex Peroni and their respective teams all missed out crossing the chequered flag.

Williams had the best start of the trio as the West Australian and teammates Niklas Krütten and Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer made it as high as 15th overall and second in Gold Class.

Unfortunately, a fairytale end wasn't to be as the team had to retire the car due to an issue after just 65 laps.

Peroni and his teammates Florian Scholze and Patrick Assenheimer didn’t do much better as they only made it to 45 laps before breaking down just after the hour and half mark in 48th.

Capo on the other hand was the longest serving driver of the three Aussies as he and teammates Fabrizio Crestani and Sam Neary made it to 101 laps before their campaign came to a halt.

All three will put a forgettable weekend behind them as they shift focus to the 24-Hours of Spa, which takes place at the world-famous Spa-Francorchamps and kicks off on 29 June.
