Aussies galore at Spa 24H

Chaz Mostert (pictured centre right) was one of many Aussies in action during the 24 Hours of Spa.
Calan Williams led all Australians in the famous 24-hours of Spa over the weekend with an outright 14th place finish to go along with a second place in the Gold Cup.

Originally qualifying in 45th outright alongside teammates Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer and Niklas Krütten, the latter started behind the wheel of the BMW M4 GT3 and made-up ground in quick succession, before Simmenauer made his way into the top 20 by the time Williams jumped in the car for the first time at the five-hour mark.

The trio held the position for a number of hours before Williams found himself back in the car for his second stint at the 10-hour mark, where he was able to put in a race-defining performance that saw them fifth overall and first in class.

Jumping back into the car with only five hours to go, Williams put in yet another strong stint before handing the reigns to Simmenauer for the final two hours – where he would cross the start-finish line for the final time to claim what was an extraordinary result for the team.

Jordan Love was the other driver in action for the Haupt team, finishing fifth in the Bronze class and 24th overall in the #79 Mercedes AMG.

Alex Peroni joined the German trio of Patrick Assenheimer, Kennith Heyer and Florian Scholze in the #3 Mercedes AMG GT3 and finished in 32nd overall, claiming a top 10 finish in the bronze class in the process.

Also competing in the Bronze class was the familiar pairing of Stephen and Brenton Grove, who had Repco Supercars Championship driver Anton De Pasquale and Kiwi star Earl Bamber by their side in the #23 Porsche 911 GT3 R.

Unfortunately the quartet didn't have had the result they were hoping for with 13th in class and 45th overall, but they put in an incredible amount of work throughout the weekend.

After qualifying seventh overall in the Super Pole session, Ricky Capo and his Grasser Racing Team finished with a DNF to their name.

In what was a busy weekend for Aussies abroad, Will Power found himself back on the podium in NTT Indycar Series after an excellent performance in an incident-filled race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

After just missing out on the Firestone Fast Six in qualifying, the Australian powered his way through the grid while avoiding disaster to finish in third.

Scott McLaughlin was in contention for a podium finish throughout the majority of the race but had to settle for fifth. He was openly frustrated by some defensive tactics from a lapped car that halted his progress towards the front of the pack.

Competing as a support category to the Indycar series in Ohio, Lochie Hughes had a weekend to forget in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Series after failing to finish two of the three races.

While he had a solid start with P4 overall, Hughes was classified asa non finisher in races two and three - putting a large dint in his title aspirations.

And while he may not be Australian, reigning Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen has done the country proud - winning on his NASCAR debut.

The Kiwi was behind the wheel of Trackhouse Racing's #91 Chevrolet as part of the series' visit to the streets of Chicago, and after coming out on top of an entertaining battle with Justin Haley and Chase Elliott with just a few laps to go, he managed to hold on for the victory - the first in 60 years when a driver has won on debut.
