Oscar Piastri has enjoyed a career-best FIA Formula 1 World Championship finish overnight after finishing the British Grand Prix in fourth place.

The first-year rookie was in fine form all weekend at Silverstone and was on track for a maiden F1 podium after a remarkable P3 in Qualifying on Saturday before a strong start to the 58-lap race from the second row.

With Piastri and McLaren teammate Lando Norris running third and second respectively for much of the opening stint of the race – Norris having led for a few laps off the line - the McLaren duo were experiencing a trouble-free run and extended the gap over the trailing cars.

Unfortunately Piastri was the victim of a poorly timed safety car intervention, which came shortly after he completed his pit stop. The Victorian eventually fell behind Lewis Hamilton after the seven-time champion took advantage of the shortened pit stop and re-entered ahead of Piastri.

Piastri was unable to pass the Brit during the remaining laps of the race and had to settle for fourth place, although he was still highly impressive as he finished within a second of Hamilton and held off a fast-charging George Russell on the safety car restart to finish comfortably in fourth.

Norris would eventually hold on for second place, reaching the chequered flag behind championship leader Max Verstappen, who extended his lead at top of the standings over teammate Sergio Perez.

Piastri’s finish saw him bank a solid amount of points towards his overall points total, the 22-year-old jumping from 14th to 11th on the standings as a result.

Piastri wasn't the only one over the weekend to experience some joy at Silverstone, with Jack Doohan finding himself back on the podium as he continued his good run of form in the FIA Formula 2 World Championship.

230710_doohanAfter qualifying in fourth place earlier in the weekend – only a tenth of a second off pole sitter and fellow Alpine academy driver Victor Martins - the Queenslander fought hard to turn the reverse grid sprint race into a well-deserved podium finish.

A somewhat slower start to the feature race saw the 20-year-old drop to fifth behind Enzo Fittipaldi at the jump, but he was able to make up the position and set himself up for a charge to the line later in the race, narrowly missing out on a second podium of the weekend to settle for fourth.

His best point scoring round since Jeddah means Doohan now sits in seventh in the standings.

The usual FIA Formula 3 Championship regulars of Christian Mansell, Hugh Barter and Tommy Smith were also in action over the weekend.

In similar fashion to Doohan, Mansell was the best of the three this time around with a first ever podium finish in the wet sprint race, which was followed a fifth-place finish in the feature race, confirming a personal best weekend in the category.

The next best Aussie was Barter, who finished in sixth place in the sprint race on Saturday before a solid 13th in the feature race, while Smith had a weekend to forget, spending the majority of the weekend at the back end of the grid.

The final Aussie to compete on the grand stage at the British Grand Prix was Harri Jones in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

Jones avoided the chaos all race long to finish in a season-best seventh place, while also taking home P3 in the rookie class in the one and only race of the weekend.

All four categories will return in two weeks' time as support categories for the FIA Formula 1 World Championships visit to Budapest, Hungary on 21-23 July.
