Update for tarmac rally competitors

Motorsport Australia is providing further information to assist licence holders on the changes relating to the tarmac licence categories.
Following the recent outline of the updated licence requirements for rally competitors, Motorsport Australia is providing further information to assist licence holders on the changes relating to the tarmac licence categories.
 
The tarmac licence requirements, which only apply to those competing in Targa style tarmac rally events, are outlined below.
 
A clarification of the requirements for drivers and navigators, and the dates for completion of the Motorsport Academy course (a division of the Australian Driving Institute) is now outlined below.

Tarmac Rally Category C Driver – 130km/h

National Rally Licence required
Medical required in line with the National Rally Licence criteria
Successful completion of an online course prior to competing in any 2023 events (course delivered by Motorsport Academy)
Completion of the Motorsport Academy course required from 1 Jan 2024

Tarmac Rally Category B Driver – 165km/h

- FIA International Rally D Licence required
- Successful completion of an online course prior to competing in any 2023 events (course delivered by Motorsport Academy)
- Completion of the Motorsport Academy course required from 1 Jan 2024
- Pre-licence conditions: Completion of five Motorsport Australia rally events (including 130km/h speed limited events)

Tarmac Rally Category A Driver – 200km/h

FIA International Rally C Licence required
Successful completion of an online course prior to competing in any 2023 events (course delivered by Motorsport Academy) Completion of the Motorsport Academy course required from 1 Jan 2024
Pre-licence conditions: If holding a National Rally Licence, completion of 10 Motorsport Australia Rally events. If holding an ITR-D, completion of five Motorsport Australia National or International Rally events

HOW TO COMPLETE THE ONLINE COURSE FOR 2023 EVENTS

For existing competitors (drivers and navigators), this online course will be available from 7 August 2023 and MUST be completed prior to taking part in any event in 2023.

Please check back on the Motorsport Australia website and Motorsport Academy website closer to this date for more information.

The online course will be self-paced and cost $75. This program does require participants to achieve a competent result to be eligible to proceed with competing in an event in 2023.

MOTORSPORT ACADEMY DRIVING COURSE - 2024

From 1 January 2024, current drivers and navigators must complete a self-paced online program (unless already completed in 2023) and an in-person, two-day, practical course prior to competing in your first event in 2024.

The two practical training days will be delivered at a venue located in the competitor’s home state (*or at another location if preferred).
(*excluding Northern Territory).

A further breakdown of the course costs are also now available for competitors and navigators.
 

CURRENT DRIVERS

Current Drivers: Motorsport Academy Course - completion required from 1 Jan 2024

Cost: $1675 OR $1375 per person when sharing the on-road training
The training includes:

Online self-paced program:
$75 (only required if not completed in 2023)

On-road training: 1 day
8am – 4pm
Option 1: $800 per person, 1 instructor: 1 driver
Option 2: $500 per person, 1 instructor: 2 drivers

On-track training: 1 day
8am – 4.30pm
1 instructor to a maximum of 4 drivers
$800 per person

*The online self-paced course must be completed prior to competing in any 2023 events.

CURRENT NAVIGATORS

Current Navigators: Motorsport Academy Online Course - completion required prior to competing in 2023

Cost: $82.50 (includes GST)
For those holding a Motorsport Australia Navigator Only licence

Those co-drivers holding a National Rally Licence will need to do the driving course in line with driver requirements, or alternatively revert back to a Navigator Only Licence and only be required to complete an online course. Please contact member services if you wish to change your licence type.
 

NEW DRIVERS AND NEW NAVIGATORS

New Drivers: Motorsport Academy Course - required before entering any event in 2023 and beyond

Cost: $2225 per person OR $1925 per person when sharing the on-road training

Navigator not required but can attend
Option 1: $800 per person (1 instructor, 1 driver)
Option 2: $500 per person (1 instructor and 2 drivers)

On-track training: 1 day
8am - 4.30pm

$800 per participant

Navigator training: 1 day (both navigator and driver to attend)
8am - 4pm
$880 combined price for both driver and navigator (1 instructor to work with 1 driver and 1 navigator)

Online mechanical course: 3-4 hours
3-4 hours, self paced
$110 (includes GST) per participant

The completion of the practical course will be a requirement for any competitor wishing to compete in an event from 1 January 2024.
 
Any person wishing to take part in tour events only requires a Motorsport Australia Speed Licence.
