The Bennett family have dominated the final round of the Motorsport Australia WA Motorkhana Championship 2023 season, with William and Amy securing an extraordinary one-two finish.
With a solid entry list of 38 competitors participating in the round at Carco.com.au Raceway, William Bennett proved too strong for the field over the course of the 12 tests, as a near-perfect run helped him to an accumulative time of 291.33 seconds and the only driver to go under 300 seconds.
Right from the get-go, William was in hot form, with a four-test winning streak giving him an early lead before he finished the event off with five consecutive test wins – his dominance seeing him walk away with 10 test wins.
Although William was in a league of his own for much of the event, the battle for second was far closer as Amy Bennett overcame a big penalty midway through the event to edge out the impressive Jurgen Lunsmann by less than two seconds.
Despite not winning a test throughout the day and suffering a big-time penalty on one test, Amy’s consistency was enough to get her the second-place finish as she was faster than Lunsmann for the whole day.
The critical moment between the two came on the eighth test when Amy went wide, which resulted in her finishing 18 seconds off Lunsmann and giving the latter a slight advantage.
Showing no signs of intimidation, Amy managed to go faster in the remaining four tests and passed Lunsmann on the penultimate test – giving her a solid total of 320.75 seconds, while Lunsmann ended up with a score of 322.15 seconds.
Lunsmann also finished the day with a class win, as did the fourth-placed Simon Ridgewell, who was also in contention for a second-place finish with his final total being 324.04 seconds.
Rounding out the top five was James Bennett, with the leading junior driver missing out on fourth by less than one second but beating another member of the family Ross Bennett by around six seconds.
Another two of Championship’s current heavy hitters finished much lower than usual with Jim Newell in seventh after receiving two late time penalties, while Scott Bennett ended the day in 11th behind the wheel of a Nissan 180sx – but with a class win.
