Daniel Ricciardo and Oscar Piastri have both enjoyed a top-10 finish at the Mexican Grand Prix on Monday morning with the Australians placing seventh and eighth respectively.
 
Taking out victory in a dominant performance was Max Verstappen, with the Dutchman’s record-breaking 16th victory for the season coming over a highly impressive Lewis Hamilton and polesitter Charles Leclerc.
 
Of the two Aussies though, it was Ricciardo who produced a better weekend overall, having shown plenty of pace across the board, having peaked in qualifying, where he secured a second-row start in fourth.
 
Although he had a good race and showed lots of fight, there was nothing he could do to hold off the two Mercedes drivers in Hamilton and George Russell, as well as the fast-charging Lando Norris, who was voted Driver of the Day after climbing 12 places to finish fifth.


Piastri also did his best to hold off Russell, but like Ricciardo, lost out to the Brit during the race’s second standing start after a red flag period midway through the race, while allowing his McLaren teammate to go past in the final stint.
 
Despite falling behind Russell and eventually Norris after the second restart, Piastri’s biggest challenge came from Ricciardo’s AlphaTauri teammate Yuki Tsunoda, with the duo making contact on multiple occasions.
 
Unfortunately for the Japanese driver, his last attempt at passing Piastri proved disastrous as the contact between the two saw him facing the wrong direction and tumbling down the order.
 
Piastri was unaffected by the two coming together and cruised home in eighth after letting Norris go by on lap 56.  
 
Ricciardo and Piastri’s result was the first time two Australians have scored Formula 1 World Championship points in a singular Grand Prix since 2013, when Ricciardo and Mark Webber, placed 10th and third at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
 
Fittingly, the FIA Formula 1 World Championship returns to that same circuit this weekend with the São Paulo Grand Prix to take place at Autódromo José Carlos Pace. 

Earlier on in the weekend, Jack Doohan got his chance to jump in a Formula 1 car as he took part in Friday's Free Practice 1. 

Behind the wheel of Pierre Gasly's Alpine-Renault A523, Doohan was one of five rookie drivers to take part in the session and completed a productive 26 laps, which saw him 18th fastest overall, and third out the rookies.


Aussie teenager Jack Beeton was also in open-wheel action over the weekend, as he enjoyed two victories in the opening round of the 2023 Formula 4 South East Asia Championship.

Taking place at Zhuzhou International Circuit in China, Beeton was dominant for much of the weekend, grabbing pole position in both qualifying sessions and converting each into comfortable victories - the second of which was by 18 seconds.

Unfortunately, the Queenslander finished the weekend off in second place on the standings after a dramatic rollover over in the reverse-grid race saw him fail to finish.

The Championship will now head to the famous Guia Circuit in Macau for a non-championship event, where Beeton will be joined at AGI Sport by fellow Australians Peter Bouzinelos and Nicolas Stati.
