The final competitive club event for 2023 was run on the weekend with the New England Sporting Car Club’s (NESCC) fifth khanacross of the year seeing a strong field of more than 23 competitors.

Taking out the victory after five completed tests was David Opie after the Mitsubishi Evo 4WD Turbo driver dominated proceedings to claim a 17second victory over Jackson Halloran.

Opie was certainly the driver to beat throughout the day as he finished with the second fastest time on the opening test before going fastest in the remaining four tests.

As for Halloran, despite finishing more than 17 seconds off the winner, Halloran still produced an impressive performance over the course of the day, getting the most out of his VS Commodore 2WD car.

So good was his performance, Halloran was the only non-4WD car in the top five as he comfortably occupied second place, beating the next best driver in Daniel Kemenyvary, who rounded out the podium 16 seconds off.

Although more than half a minute separated the top three drivers, the battle for Kemenyvary’s podium place was far closer as just 12 seconds separated him over both Bevan Michel and number one seed, Matt Carey.

Bevan actually proved to be Opie’s biggest challenger for much of the event, which included winning the opening test, however a wide penalty sustained on the third test ruled him out of the agenda.

Following on from his penalty, he responded with two strong runs to finish within a second of Opie on both test four and five.

Just missing out on a top five finish was the second best 2WD car in Trent Boyd, who claimed the 2L & under class and edged out junior class winner Maverick Kemenyvary for sixth place by just one and half seconds.

Brian Ivin secured eighth place overall, beating the event’s best placed woman in Amanda Boyd by 30 seconds, while the runner-up junior driver in James Ivin rounded out the top 10.

Club President Matt Carey was pleased with how the club wrapped up the year in style.

“After what has been a pretty strong year for the club, to have a khanacross with more than 20 cars entered was a perfect way to sign off for 2023,” Carey said.

“We were really pleased with how it all turned out and I would argue that this was probably one of the best, if not the best, events for the year, so a big thank you to whoever came out.

“As for the competition itself, it was actually a really entertaining battle for the win and although 17 seconds may seem like a lot, when you consider the two cars at the top and the cars in the running excluding penalties, it was an exciting day.

“Overall, it was a great way to end the year and we can’t wait to get the 2024 season underway.”
