After more than two decades at Motorsport Australia, Michael Smith, the Director of Motorsport & Commercial Operations, will leave the organisation in the coming months to take up an international posting.
Smith first joined the Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS) as a member of the Victorian State Office and has since held several high-profile roles in the organisation. He leaves a significant legacy having led the organisation’s motorsport department and event operations most recently.
During his time at Motorsport Australia, Smith has a long list of achievements having been one of the key leaders of the business in recent times.
Following an extensive recruitment process that began approximately one year ago, Smith has now accepted an international, high-profile position in the motorsport industry, relocating overseas to take on an exciting new challenge.
Motorsport Australia CEO Sunil Vohra congratulated Smith on his new role, while also acknowledging his impressive legacy on the Australian motorsport industry.
“Having worked with Mike over the first few months of my time with the organisation, it’s clear that he has been an asset to this organisation and the sport,” Vohra explained.
“While it’s disappointing for Motorsport Australia to lose Mike, we know that this is an opportunity that he has been considering since early last year and has now accepted that new role overseas. We are certainly pleased to be supporting him as he takes that next step in his career.
“We look forward to working with Mike until he departs the organisation after the Australian Grand Prix and celebrating his many achievements.”
Smith himself was grateful for his experience at Motorsport Australia and thanked those who had made his time in the sport so memorable.
“Having been at Motorsport Australia for more than 20 years, this decision was not an easy one to make at all and is certainly a very emotional time for me,” Smith said.
“I’ve made lifelong friends and enjoyed nearly every moment working in a sport that people are so passionate about.
“It will be a bittersweet, final few weeks at Motorsport Australia as I bid a fond farewell to the people who make our sport great, in particular my past and present colleagues at Motorsport Australia who have made these last two decades such a rich and rewarding experience.”
Motorsport Australia will begin the extensive recruitment process in the coming weeks, with the position to be advertised on the Motorsport Australia website and through regular recruitment channels once open.
