With the 2024 WA State Speed Series getting underway this weekend, series organisers are proud of the level it has reached.

Currently boasting 100 registered competitors for the 2024 season, the competition has come in leaps and bounds over the past few years, attracting one of its highest entry lists in recent times.

Key to that improvement has been the introduction of a new class structure that has seen an influx of road car competitors, with just under a quarter of this year’s season-entry list being brand new competitors.

The calendar itself is also looking extremely healthy, with 13 events at three different venues making up the schedule – seven of which will be at Collie Motorplex, four at Carco.com.au Raceway and two in Albany.

Collie Motorplex has played a pivotal role in the series’ impressive upturn over the years, with this weekend’s opening round one taking place at the popular venue.

Competitors will also take part in a new format that will debut this weekend. The new format will be known as the Collie Combined Sprint, and will utilise both of the circuit’s long and short layouts.

With more than 70 competitors confirmed for the season opener, interested participants can still register for the remaining rounds of the season.

Ahead of the opening round, series manager Phil Morley was proud of the organising committee’s achievement.

“Personally, I am stoked that in the few short years, we have turned the series back around to a strong level and something we can be proud of,” Morley said.

“Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the committee, we had decent fields at all 13 events, and I am delighted we have been able to increase our overall season registrants before the first event has even run.

“Unfortunately, reigning champion Peter Morley will be retiring from full time competition and will be only competing on an irregular basis. Although it’s sad not to have him there, it will allow someone else to be champion.

“Looking at the 90 competitors registered for the season, there are quite a few individuals who can step up and take the mantle. This series has long been dominated by Formula Libres, so it will be interesting to see if one of the sedan entries can snatch the title.

“The good work of the committee has also allowed me to return to full-time competition, so I am very excited for the season to begin, starting with this weekend with the new Collie event.

“Finally, on behalf of the WA State Speed Series committee, a big thank you to all competitors and stakeholders who have backed the series by continuing to attend and showing lots of support.”

The 2024 WA State Speed Series season kicks off with the Collie Combined Sprint at Collie Motorplex on 24-25 February.
