Victorian club continues to celebrate iconic Shelby Cobra

When the late great Carrol Shelby wanted to go racing back in the day, he approached Chevrolet about developing an engine and a car, to which he was rejected as the powerhouse organisation already had the famous Corvette.

That then led Shelby to approach Ford with his idea, to which they struck a deal, thus creating the AC Cobra 289, which went on to blitz everything.

While the car would eventually change over the years with a new Ford engine replacing the Shelby, the original car would forever remain an iconic staple in Ford’s large catalogue.

That particular Cobra 289 has inspired the birth of many car clubs paying tribute to it around the world, including the Melbourne Cobra Owners Club, who are just one of the many Motorsport Australia-affiliated clubs at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix.

Founded more than 20 years ago, the club is small and unique where the 40 members all own replicas of the cars, which they put on display at a variety of events, as well as holding a number of social runs.

“It's fantastic being here at Albert Park as it's a great atmosphere and it's good to show the cars off,” Club Member Tim Kemp said.

“People come and sit in the car and take photos in it. There are plenty of kinds who love coming here, which is important because that's your next generation of enthusiasts - so you have got to promote that.

“I think we have been here about six times and every year we get a lot of interest in the car, which is nice.

“We just love doing driving events as it's a great car and a lot of fun to drive, so we love going to displays and the GP is one of the favourite ones to do.

“Some members like to actually put the cars on the track, but our main events are cruises up in the hills or at different car shows – we are purely a social club.

“We always welcome new members, but preferably those who have the car because we are specialised. However, we are also open to those who are wanting to build one because we can give tips.

"We also have someone in the club who actually makes the bodies and chassis, and you can order one from him and have it made in whatever configuration you want, so it’s almost like you're building it yourself.”

In addition to runs, the club also holds a monthly meeting at the second Tuesday of every month at The Manningham, which is open to anyone interested in joining.

Anyone interested in joining the club can do so via its website here.
