The highly popular Northam Motorsport Festival took over the shire of Northam on the weekend as a huge crowd of fans were treated to an entertaining spectacle.
Celebrating the history of motor racing within Western Australia, streets of Northam were turned into a race track as more than 80 cars raced through the city in a regularity-style event, allowing every competitor three sessions to post score points.
With four categories making up the schedule, it was the Bendigo Bank Flying 50 serving as the main event with Sarah Lamont claiming the overall victory in her 1961 Ford Anglia 105.
Lamont took out the win after winning the final trial, which saw her leapfrog Bruce Allen by four points in total.
It was a similar result in the Tin Top Racing Cars, as Jamie Scott’s final trial win saw the 1979 Ford Escort Mk2 driver replace trial two winner Chris Malone, who finished seventh in the finale, in top spot by the end of the event.
In the 23-car Sports Cars group, Gary Cutler sealed the victory on the final trial, after the 1977 Porsche 911 RS driver added the victory to his opening trial win. Despite finishing third in the second trial, which was won by James Mason in the 1969 Triumph Spitfire, Cutler edged out his rival on the final trial to seal the win.
Of the four categories, there was just one clean sweep, which occurred in Historic Touring Cars. Peter Hammond was the star performer as he steered his 1953 Holden FJ to three trial wins – comfortably finishing ahead of 1968 Alfa Romeo driver Ivan Olsen.
In addition to the track action, there was plenty of activations and entertainment off the track, with the Shannon’s Classic Car Show, BMX stunt shows, Meet and Greets with speedway legends, and family-focused face painting and arcade games.
