Dean Amos has won the 2024 Motorsport Australia Queensland Hillclimb Championship after another thrilling edition of the popular state championship event.

With more than 100 competitors entered in the annual hill climb, it was Amos who ended up taking the title thanks to a special performance that saw him beat Warwick Hutchinson and Dean Tighe by more than one second.

All competitors had up to eight attempts at the famous Mount Cotton Hillclimb during the event, but Amos needed half that as he recorded his title-winning time of 36.36 seconds on his fourth run.

Despite his quickest time coming on the fourth attempt, Amos’ second and third run of the day were both good enough to win the event, before sealing the deal on the fourth.

While he had a further two runs at the hill climb, he was unable to better his time, remaining as the only driver to post a time under 37 seconds.

Behind him, the battle for second place, and for the fastest Queenslander award, was far closer as just one hundredth of a second split Hutchinson and Tighe.

Although Hutchinson had the edge over Tighe for much of the event, going faster on all but one of the runs, their battle culminated in a final run shootout, where Hutchinson’s 37.51 second run was enough to pip Tighe for the runner-up finish.

Unsurprisingly, the event was dominated by the Formula Libre classes with the top nine places all belonging to drivers within the class, including Brett Bull in fourth place and Neil Lewis in fifth.

The highest-ranked driver outside Formula Libre was Ross Mackay in the Williams Sports Racer, who rounded out the outright top 10 with a time of 43.28 seconds.

Having been only able to go sub 44 seconds on his fifth attempt after sitting multiple runs, it was the time that mattered most as he knocked Formula Libre driver Edward McCane out of the top 10 overall as a result.

A further one and a half seconds down the order was Mark Crespan, who guided his Ford Cobra to the unofficial fastest tin top honour, while claiming the Glyn Scott Perpetual Trophy for fastest time by a Sports Car.

Other notable results included the 14th placed Michael Larymore picking up the Vince Appleby Trophy for being the fastest sedan, Jeremy Mattea scoring 19th overall and the Martin Tighe Trophy for being the highest ranked Formula Ford, and Krystal Cunningham as the fastest woman.
