Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Broc Feeney has won the opening race of the Betr Darwin Triple Crown in an entertaining battle at Hidden Valley.
Feeney, who started Saturday’s race from second, was unstoppable after getting past polesitter James Golding early in the race. From there, he didn’t look back and powered to a comfortable eight second lead at the chequered flag.
There was plenty of action behind Feeney, with one of the standout performances of the race coming from Mobil1 Optus Racing’s Chaz Mostert who made up 17 places after a less-than-ideal qualifying performance, ending the race in fifth.
Earlier in the day, PremiAir Nulon Racing’s Golding had secured his first ever Supercars pole position in an impressive Boost Mobile Top 10 Shootout performance. While he had a strong race, Golding would narrowly miss out on a podium finish, crossing the line in fourth behind Championship leader Will Brown.
It was also a strong return to form for DEWALT Racing’s Mark Winterbottom who returned to the podium and finished in second place.
Feeney, meanwhile, was understandably thrilled to return to the top step of the podium.
“It was good hard racing with Jimmy (Golding) there for the first few laps,” Feeney said.
“This car was a rocket ship. The last few rounds have been pretty tough, so to bounce back with a big win is pretty awesome.
“We’ll bounce back tomorrow. I said to the crew I want to win tomorrow so I can do burnouts for this crowd. I haven’t done one for a while so I’m pretty keen to let one rip.”
Supercars returns to action tomorrow, with one final 48-lap race in the Darwin sun from 3.10pm ACST.
