Mobil1 Optus Racing’s Chaz Mostert has starred on Saturday night at Sydney Motorsport Park, claiming an impressive race win.
It was another battle of strategy throughout the field, but ultimately a two-stopper proved to be the winning choice for Mostert and the Walkinshaw Andretti United team.
Penrite Racing’s Matthew Payne chose to only stop once and while he led the race in the dying stages, Mostert was able to catch Payne and be the first to take the chequered flag after 51 laps of impressive racing in front of a big crowd at the Eastern Creek circuit.
Castrol Racing’s Thomas Randle would round out the podium after leading the field into turn two off the start line.
Earlier in the day Monster Castrol Racing’s Cameron Waters secured pole position by the smallest of margins over Tickford teammate Randle, just 0.03 seconds separating the pair in what was an exhilarating Top 10 Shootout.
Mostert was understandably thrilled to be able to claim the race win and overhauling Payne in the dying stages of the race.
“It’s long old slog around here, but the car was really good,” Mostert said.
“You never believe it until the job is done. For today, I’m glad we had some good tyres on the car and were able to get it done.”
Saturday night’s result also saw current Championship leader Will Brown extend his Championship lead over Red Bull Ampol Racing teammate Broc Feeney to 96 points, while Mostert’s victory saw him move to within 126 points of Brown and stamp his claim for a 2024 title tilt.
