The Kempsey Sporting Car Club held a successful Junior Development Day, attracting 26 drivers who took part in a program dedicated to developing young talent.
Supported by the first round of the 2024
Supercheap Auto Club Development Fund, the club organised the event to introduce drivers aged 12-17 to the fundamentals of motorsport in a safe and constructive environment.
The day began with the participants completing an assessment with professional driving instructors, before being split into two groups based on their vehicle type—manual or automatic.
These two groups focused on core driving skills, while a third group received instruction on vehicle basics.
For the more experienced drivers, the day progressed to specific driving exercises under the guidance of instructors – these included a series of motorkhana courses designed to challenge participants and build their confidence behind the wheel.
As the day progressed, participants had the chance to put their new skills to the test in a competitive format, completing two timed tests with their mentors close by for support.
Byron Berry took out the top spot with a combined time of 75.85 over the two runs - Berry just pipped Alex Barnes, who finished in second place just 3.8 seconds behind the leader.
Kel Outlaw took out third position, shaving one second off his first time in the second run to lock up the podium.

The day was then capped off with a trophy presentation, with awards given for first, second, and third place as well as two additional encouragement awards recognising those who showed exceptional improvement throughout the day.
