Monster Castrol Racing’s Cam Waters took advantage of a Tickford Racing front row lock out at Symmons Plains Raceway, executing the win in what was a chaotic Race 18 victory at the 2024 NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint.

Waters started the afternoon alongside teammate Thomas Randle in first position, just four hundredths of a second separating the duo in qualifying ahead of the second race of the weekend.

It was Waters with the stronger jump in Launceston, but Randle’s defensive efforts at Turn 1 foiled an early attempt to take over the race lead.

However, it wasn’t long before Waters was able to claim first position – taking advantage of Randle running wide at the Turn 4 hair pin, quickly opening up a lead to his teammate before the chaos ensued.

The first of Sunday’s safety cars came on lap eight with DEWALT & Tradie Beer Racing’s David Reynolds stranded trackside, the bulk of the field seeing the incident as an opportunity to complete their mandatory pit stop.

The safety car wasn’t sidelined for long before another incident, with CoolDrive & Snowy River Racing’s Aaron Love and SCT Motorsport & Pizza Hut Racing’s Jaxon Evans making contact on lap 20 to end Jaxon Evans’ Tasmanian campaign.

From then on championship leader Will Brown was in the hunt for Waters, however chaos between Red Bull Ampol Racing teammates and Randle in the top five gave Waters free range to close out the victory.

For the race winner, it was a Sunday to remember.

“So happy to get the win. Got a good start and so did Tommy, he fought hard for Turn 1 - which was fine. (Randle) just made a little mistake at Turn 4 and ran wide. Gutted for him, he should’ve probably been on the podium with me,” Waters said.

“I was just trying to keep a small gap to Will (Brown) and let him cook his tyres. I knew Tommy was in there. 20 to go I started to push on.

“Yesterday we didn’t really maximise and convert it into a result, so it’s nice to bounce back today, get the result that we deserve. Get some good points and a bit more momentum going into the enduros.”
