The Sporting Car Club of South Australia (SCCSA) celebrated its 90th birthday earlier this month, with more than 250 guests in attendance to celebrate the second oldest continually running car club in the world.

Founded in 1934, the SCCSA formed following the successful showing of a veteran car run featuring 18 cars and 10 motorbikes from Adelaide’s city central to the Glenelg Football Oval.

The inaugural event was a huge success 90 years ago, with more than 85,000 people lining the streets of Adelaide to watch the procession.

The anniversary celebrations took place on Saturday 10 August at the Wolf Bass Centre at the Morphettville Racecourse and the event highlighted the SCCSA’s impact on the community over its 90 years in operation with 10 current members sharing a 90th birthday with the club this year.

The evening was highlighted with messages from Life Members of the club, as well as past Presidents, who shared their experiences with the club and its impact over their years of service.

Also in attendance to celebrate the occasion was Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, 36th Governor of South Australia, alongside other invited dignitaries.

Current SCCSA President Chris Frith made special thanks to the organisations that have supported the SCCSA over its lifetime, notably the impact of the South Australian Motor Racing Officials Association, as well as its many members and volunteers.

“We have a diverse membership base of over 1800 and to service those members we have numerous Sections looking after their particular interests – veteran and vintage, classic and modern, competition, hill climb, HQ racing, the Historic Racing Register, the library (another story in itself) and the Fleurieu Group,” Frith said.

“Tonight, I have not called out the particular names of our founders or benefactors, or influential managers, as they are large in number - some large in character- and to discuss one or other is to miss out on another 20 or more.

“Many are recognised by room names at the Clubrooms and Collingrove, some have trophies in their name, but all are held in high esteem by those that knew them, knew of them, or see the legacy of their work.

“This Club is here now, and successful because of the work over the years of hundreds of the “hidden” volunteers, those that work in the background to support our events and facilities without a thought about personal gain or self-aggrandisement.”
