A global motorsport volunteer career for Moore

Mark Moore’s career is one that inspires, volunteering at motorsport events at a national and international level.

Moore’s officiating journey began in 2003 when he was a spectator at the Bathurst 1000.

His view of the track was blocked by a tractor, and he could spot officials on the other side of the fence, motivating him to apply as a Motorsport Australia volunteer official.

A few weeks later, Moore was trackside as an official at Sydney Motorsport Park and he hasn’t looked back since.

Moore has dipped his toes in every officiating opportunity possible, including the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, which he has volunteered at since 2006.

“I was a Chief Marshal at the 2025 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix,” Moore said.

“I help organise all the trackside personnel and we’ve got over 400 people to deploy each day.

“My job is making sure the circuit is properly staffed with a good mix of experienced marshals and new officials, so the veterans can mentor the newcomers.”

For Moore, officiating has extended across international borders, offering him a breadth of motorsport knowledge and experience.

“Overseas events are so different yet so similar to Australian motorsport,” Moore explained.

“When it comes to Formula One and other FIA sanctioned racing, the trackside operations are virtually identical.

“The people share the same passion worldwide, and you can show up not knowing anyone and leave with dozens of new friends.”

These international experiences have provided Moore with unforgettable memories, with the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix becoming a special event for Moore.

“The 2024 Miami Grand Prix was incredible,” Moore said.

“We were housed 45 minutes from town with an 18-bus convoy.

“They’d shut down entire freeways with police escorts for all 200 marshals all dressed in orange jumpsuits.”

Although Moore doesn’t have only one international event he cherishes, 24 Hours of Spa always comes to mind and reminds him of circuits at home.

“Working events like the Spa 24 Hours at that iconic circuit makes you appreciate how world class our Bathurst circuit really is,” Moore said.

“There are so many little moments and every event creates its own special memories.”

Moore offers his advice to those who want to get involved in motorsport volunteering.

“Come with passion,” Moore said.

“If you’ve got genuine enthusiasm for motorsport, the community will embrace you.

“The family you create is amazing and it doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, young or old.

“When you show up with that passion, people welcome you in and you become part of this incredible motorsport family.”
