Aussie drivers secure weekend podiums

A quartet of Australian drivers added to their seasons over the weekend, with several podiums headlining the latest round of local results in motorsport abroad.

Formula 1 – Monza

Oscar Piastri added 15 points to his Drivers’ Championship points total over the weekend, finishing third at the Italian Grand Prix behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris and reigning World Champion and race winner Max Verstappen.

Piastri’s race evolution would break even on the Sunday, but a delayed start for Piastri meant his weekend wouldn’t begin until the second Free Practice session, with reserve driver Alexander Dunne taking over the seat at the start of the round.

Piastri resumed driving duties in Free Practice Two, tallying the fourth-fastest time, before marking the third-fastest time in the third and final practice session.

There was no stopping Verstappen in qualifying, as he set the new lap record at Monza in the process. Norris rounded out the front row alongside the Dutchman, with Piastri directly behind in third.

Piastri led the chasing pack for the majority of the race, getting into numerous battles with Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, before eventually catching up to Norris towards the end of the race.

Following team orders after a slow pit-stop for Norris late in the race, Piastri selflessly swapped back second place to the British driver and ultimately finished the grand prix in third – his 14th podium of the season.

Piastri remains at the top of the Drivers’ Standings with 324 points, while Norris follows closely in second with 293 points heading into the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from 19-21 September.

McLaren, who leads the Constructors’ Championship by 337 points with eight rounds remaining, can mathematically secure the season title with strong showings at the next stop in Baku.

FIA Formula 3 – Monza

James Wharton’s first season in FIA Formula 3 has come to a close, with the young driver finishing 2025 in Italy after a terrific year with ART Grand Prix.

Wharton notched up an 11th place finish in his group in qualifying to set the tone for the weekend. Wharton performed terrifically in the Sprint Race to maintain his position in the middle of the field, finishing 16th after 18 laps.

Wharton continued that composure into Sunday for the 22-lap Feature Race, again placing 16th, and completing his fastest lap on lap 21 with a time of 1:39.793.

The 19-year-old finished 2025 with 25 points, on the back of strong Sprint Race performances in Barcelona and Spielberg, the latter of which he won. Wharton also secured points at the Silverstone Feature Race and in Budapest’s Sprint Race.

Wharton took to social media shortly after the round’s conclusion, acknowledging the hard work of his team and supporters.

“And just like that, the season is over here at Monza,” he wrote.

“The last race didn’t come easy, but we gave it everything until the very end. It’s been a year full of challenges, lessons, and some great memories along the way.

“I want to thank the team, my partners, and all of you who’ve been supporting me through every lap. Time to reset, recharge, and come back stronger for what’s next.”

GT World Challenge America – Barber

Tom Sargent, his teammate Kyle Washington and the GMG Racing team headed to Birmingham, Alabama for the penultimate round in the GT World Challenge America schedule.

The Australian-American combination put the rest of the field on notice early in the weekend, marking the fastest lap times in both practice sessions to put them in good stead for qualifying.

The pair finished eighth in class in Qualifying 1 (1:23.549), and first in Qualifying 2 (1:20.956) prior to the feature races.

Kenton Koch and Connor De Phillippi (Random Vandals Racing) proved too strong for the rest of the pack in Race One, but Sargent and Washington followed close behind securing a podium finish in the Pro-am category, crossing the finish line third (seventh outright) in their Porsche 992 GT3 R after 62 laps.

Sargent’s weekend in Alabama peaked in the final session with dramatic moments taking place throughout the Pro-am field. Early on, Sargent fought hard with the Pro class’ De Phillippi and Aaron Telitz before handing the car off to Washington.

Sargent and Washington led for the majority of the race, before Blake McDonald eventually seized the lead with eight minutes remaining in the race. Sargent and Washington stayed composed from that point on to place second in Race Two.

The GT World Challenge America returns for Round 13, the season finale Indianapolis 8 Hour from 16-19 October.

Formula Regional European Championship – Spielberg

Prema Racing driver Jack Beeton shifted over to Austria for Round Seven of the Formula Regional Championship in Europe at the Red Bull Ring.

With two races on the cards for the weekend, qualifying provided ample opportunity for drivers to secure large bundles of points.

Placed in Group B for qualifying, Beaton managed an 11th place finish, 0.8 seconds off the pace of eventual Race One winner Matteo De Palo. Shortly after, Beeton moved himself up the order for Race Two, finishing fourth in the second qualifying session.

In the 28-strong field, Beeton finished 23rd, just behind American teammate Alexandre Powell. Beeton quickly turned his attention to Race Two, where he moved back into the points and capitalising on his strong qualifying performance.

Beeton claimed sixth with a best lap performance on lap 17 (1:27.109), and added eight points to his 22 Drivers’ Championship points total for 2025.

Three rounds now remain in the season with Barcelona circled next on the calendar, taking place at the iconic Circuit de Barcelona from 19-21 September.

International GT Open – Spielberg

Jayden Kelly made his International GT Open debut in Austria over the weekend, partnering up with Josh Rattican for Greystone Racing, and wasted no time making an impact at the Red Bull Ring.

The pair finished sixth outright in the first qualifying session and eighth in the second qualifying session to put themselves near the front of the field for the two main races.

Kelly helped the team to a good start in Race One as the opening driver, before Rattican also pushed along the McLaren 720S GT3 Evo for the 44-lap session. Ultimately, they finished fourth outright and fourth in the Pro class, getting their first Championship points in the process.

Kelly and Rattican did one better in the second race after 39 laps, squeezing into the podium three seconds behind winners Greystone teammates Dean Macdonald and James Kell, and clocking the second fastest lap of the race on lap 20. The pair also brought their weekend points total haul to 18.
