Two Girls on Track Rally School participants show promising skills, posting strong times at a local club event.

Following the FIA Girls on Track – Rally School event at Rally School Australia in Queensland, both Lilly McLennan and Emma Wang were offered the unique opportunity to take part in their first club event behind the wheel of Rally School Australia’s Subaru BRZ.

Hosted by Ipswich West Moreton Autocross Club, both McLennan and Wang surpassed expectations over their 10 course runs in the club’s Autocross Round 3 event.

Rally School Australia owner and organiser Mick Ryan was pleased to see the two drivers having a good crack, in the event comprising 20 participants and four women in total.

“Lilly was doing times around 13th, facing all kinds of challenges, it was awesome to see her in action and embracing the sport like that for the first time,” Ryan said.

“There was quite a broad church of vehicles competing, $100 cars through to $50,000 cars too.

“Emma had three decent spins, and was less than happy with herself at the time, which is all a part of the sport, but I think her ninth run (1:56.32) looked the fastest from all 10 of her goes. Liliana had a spin around in run nine, which always serves as a nice little reminder of the limits.

“Overall though, both drivers showcased really impressive performances throughout the day and it showed a lot of promise for when they decide to get on the track again.”

McLennan saved her best run for last, finishing the course in 1:53.75, the third-quickest course time among the women’s cohort.

McLennan’s overall efforts were enough to place her third in the women’s category, putting her on the podium and receiving a trophy in the process.

“It was my first time driving a rally car and what an experience,” McLennan added.

“Attending the FIA Girls on Track – Rally School was unforgettable, and being selected to compete the next day took it to another level.

“Thank you to the event sponsors and team for making this opportunity possible — I’m still buzzing from it.”
