Australian competitors head for Sri Lanka

Australia will be well-represented this week with four local competitors to depart for the Asia-Pacific Motorsport Championship in Sri Lanka from 26-28 September.

Australian representatives Aaron Wuillemin, Corinne East-Johnston, Reece McIntosh and Marcus Watson will each head overseas to the city of Bandaragama and the Sri Lanka Karting Circuit, to take part in the upcoming championships.

McIntosh will link up with Australian Motorkhana Champions Wuillemin and East-Johnston to represent the country in Auto Gymkhana, beginning with testing on Friday.

Wuillemin and East-Johnston were also part of Australia’s travelling party to the Asia-Pacific Motorsport Championship held in Malaysia in 2023.

The three Australians will engage in timed rounds on Sunday, which will involve qualifying (from 9:25am Sunday local time) and knockout (from 11:50am Sunday local time) rounds, tallying points for both team (combined team points) and individual cups.

Furthermore, McIntosh and Wuillemin will also take part in the Kart Slalom event at the Championship. The Karting Slalom will consist of a briefing on Friday, a practice session and the round of 16 on Saturday night, and a quarter-final, semi-final and final on Sunday.

An Australian Open-Wheel Nationals Esports winner and eROC World Final runner-up, Watson will compete in the Esports portion of the championship after successfully making it through the qualifying stage earlier this month.

Watson secured the second-fastest qualifying lap on iRacing’s Okayama International Circuit during the qualifying period using a FIA F4 car, clocking in with a best lap time of 1:29.0927.

The time was the second-fastest among the 220-plus driver field, and the fastest among all Australian drivers.

Watson will begin his weekend on Friday with group practice prior to the quarter-final qualifying and race sessions to be held on Sunday morning from 11:20am.

Should Watson advance to the next round, semi-finals will begin at 2.15pm, and the final will take place at 4.45pm the same day.
