Formula 2 Championship
Jack Doohan has kept himself within mathematical contention of the FIA Formula 2 Championship title, after edging out championship leader Felipe Drugovich for his maiden feature race victory on Sunday.
After qualifying in fourth place for the round at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, the Australian was able to convert the reverse grid into a podium finish in the sprint race earlier on in the weekend.
Taking that momentum into the feature race, Doohan he was able to propel into second place off the line.
Doohan was able to stay within one-second of Drugovich for the majority of the first stint, as driver retirements and close battles behind allowed him to build a comfortable gap over David Beckmann.
An aggressive undercut strategy ultimately allowed Doohan to pass Drugovich on lap 10, handing him the race lead.
A composed Doohan then held onto the lead for the remaining laps, crossing the line just under two seconds ahead of the championship leader to take his third win of the season.
Meanwhile, fellow Australian Calan Williams had a somewhat uneventful weekend, finishing in 16th position in both the sprint and feature races.
The sprint race was one to forget for Williams, after running 13th for most of the race, the deployment of the safety car bunched the group together. Unable to reproduce any strong pace, Williams dropped a couple of positions in the final stint.
While it may not have been an ideal result, positives can be taken away from his feature race result as he ended the race having gained two positions.
With three race weekends to go, Doohan sits in fourth position in the drivers’ standings, now only five-points behind leading rookie Logan Sargeant after a brilliant weekend in Belgium. While Williams sits steady in 22nd, not being able to add to his points tally.
The second half of back-to-back Formula 2 race weekends will begin at the Zandvoort Circuit in the Netherlands on 2 September.
British Formula 4
Noah Lisle has had a poor run of results in the eighth round of the British Formula 4 Championship, failing to classify in two out of the three races of the weekend.
After qualifying in 12th position, the first race of the weekend saw Lisle finish in the same position he started, finishing as the lowest placed JHR Developments driver.
Unfortunately he wasn’t able to in the second race, and didn’t classify along with his teammate Georgi Dimitrov.
Lisle didn’t have much luck in the final race either, after Lisle’s hit the barrier at the Club Chicane following contact with Hitech’s Eduardo Coseteng.
The pair of DNF’s takes his total tally up to four for the year, as he now sits in 13th position in the championship standings.
The ninth round of the British Formula 4 Championship’s sees them visit the iconic Silverstone Circuit on 23 September.
European Le Mans
The Aussie pairing of Alex Peroni and James Allen were unable to pick up any points in the weekend’s Four Hours of Barcelona, finishing in eighth place.
Their weekend started off tough, with Peroni’ putting the Algarve Pro Racing team in 12th place in the LMP2 series, which set the scene for the following day’s endurance race.
Peroni and Allen, along with American driver John Falb, were able to move up four places after 131 laps of racing, to eventually cross the line in eighth place, only two seconds behind the Nielson racing team in seventh.
The team were able to maintain sixth position in the overall standings, only one good result away from closing in on fifth position with a couple of races to go.
The European Le Mans championship will resume in Belgium at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on 25 September.
IMSA Sportscar championship
Matt Campbell along with Frenchman Mathieu Jaminet have taken out their fifth win of 2022 after a strategic masterclass in Alton, Virginia.
Campbell played a pivotal role in sharing the wheel of the Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R, which was strategically under-fuelled during its final pit stop to chase down the Heart of Racing Team, who was on an even riskier fuel-saving strategy.
Jaminet balanced his aggression in chasing and his fuel-saving techniques to perfection, to take victory in two-hours and 40-minutes, moments before the car eventually ran out of fuel on the cooldown lap.
Fellow Aussie, Aidan Read finished in 14th position in the same race in the Rick Ware Racing Acura NSX GT3 after starting the race seventh on the grid.
The final round of the year begins in a month’s time at the Michelin raceway Road Atlanta on 28 September.
