The Motorsport Australia Victorian Hillclimb Championship resumed on the weekend with 97 competitors taking on the Gippsland Car Club’s Bryant Park hill climb for the second round of the 2022 season.

With each participant allowed up to five runs of the course, Greg Ackland needed only one to secure the victory after producing a lightning quick time of 47.06 seconds on his first attempt of the course.

The time proved not only too quick for any of the other top contenders, but for Ackland himself, as he was around four tenths slower on his next two runs before a forgettable fourth run saw him pull the plug on the day.

It was a mighty effort from Ackland, who ended up beating one of the best drivers in the country in David Mahon – the South Australian going slower on the first two runs before posting his best time on the third run with an impressive 47.13 seconds.

Although Mahon completed a further two runs of the course, he was unable to overcome Ackland’s time and settled for second place.

However with Ackland missing the opening round, Mahon remains on top of the championship after two rounds.

Rounding out the podium was another highly talented driver making their first appearance for 2022 in Alan Foley.

Foley had a terrible start to the round, but closed in on Mike Barker for third on the next run, before posting a 49.41 second run on his third attempt, securing the final podium position at the expense of Barker, who ultimately settled for fourth place.

While Ewen Moile and Wim Janssen finished fifth and sixth respectively, one of the most impressive results from the day came in the form of Mirko Grbic, who finished seventh outright.

Behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Evo, Grbic’s 52.57 second run on his fifth and final attempt saw him break his own class record from 2018 and the 12-year ‘tin top’ record for the clockwise layout previously held by Kevin Mackrell.
