The Southern District Motorsport Association (SDMA) will continue its SDMA Hillclimb Series this weekend, with an impressive entry list expected to attend what is also an ACT Hillclimb Championship round.

More than 50 competitors are already confirmed to take part in the single-day event, with more expected to flow in in the coming days.

The one-lap event will see the ACT’s best hill climbers go head-to-head with up to six opportunities to post the weekend’s fastest lap time, as well as be crowned as a class or the outright round winner.

There will be up to 16 different classes competing throughout the day, with the largest being that of AWD Level 2 over 3000cc, which will be known as Class D and have 10 entrants competing.

Held at the club’s home circuit, the track is expected to be in ideal condition with the sun forecast to shine over Fairbairn Park on Saturday – meaning spectators and competitors will get the absolute maximum performance of their cars with tyre warming unlikely to be an issue.

Headlining the stellar entry list is Paul Stingfellow, who will be looking to make it back-to-back one-lap wins at the popular circuit after taking victory in the previous round back in May.

But he won’t be the only previous winner to take the track this weekend, with round three victor, Jeffery Nichols to return in his Westfield SE Clubman.

Sean Doyle will be one looking to continue his excellent form on Saturday after a podium in his Volkswagon Golf R last time out, but he’ll have to hold another Golf driver in Brett Jorgensen at bay – the former to continue his charge into the outright top five as well as adding to his three straight Class C wins in 2023.

SDMA President, John Templeton was looking forward to the return of the one-lap hill climb and knew how important this round is to many of the competitors.

“It’s going to be a great event, the club is attracting big fields and while we normally run at a maximum capacity of 60, this gives the competitors a chance to get an extra one or two runs in,” Templeton explained.

“At the moment, it is looking like the weather is going to be very nice – we have to hold off events in July because of how cold it gets and how that affects the track, but this weekend is looking good.

“This is the first one-lap event since May, I think we will have a very competitive day and there are a lot of people who want to get those extra points for the championship.”

All the action will kick off from 9am AEST and run through to the late afternoon, with each competitor opting for as many runs as possible before the end of the day.

All spectators are welcome to attend the event, with a large display of vehicles on show for motorsport enthusiasts of all kinds.

The ACT Hillclimb Championship and SDMA Hillclimb Series will continue their 2023 seasons at Fairbairn Park on 6 August.
