One of Queensland’s most beloved motorsport events returns this weekend, with the Historic Leyburn Sprints taking to Leyburn’s public roads for an action-packed two days of sprint racing and novelty competition.

Across the event’s 27-year history, which celebrates the 1949 Australian Grand Prix running in the rural Queensland town, the Leyburn Sprints event has seen a record number of over 15,000 people visiting Leyburn annually, serving as a major fundraiser for over 25 local organisations.

With 227 sprint competitors registered to take part this weekend, the 2023 event is shaping up to be another triumph.

The event will welcome a variety of cars in action, ranging from the 1920’s to today, and will allow each driver seven attempts on the track, before the fastest of each class – including Historic Racing and Sports Cars, Historic Touring Cars, Sports Sedans and Formula Libre – are presented a trophy.

Returning for this year’s sprint event is Dean Amos, the winner of last year’s Col Furness Memorial Trophy for fastest outright time, who will be hoping to go back-to-back in the Formula Libre class.

Last year’s runner-up Warwick Hutchinson will also be competing, as well as Brett Bull who rounded out last year’s podium.

However, the Leyburn Sprints are not the only competition on the line-up for this weekend, as the event will also play host to a number of enthusiastic vehicle owners taking part in the weekend’s Vintage Vans and Junior regularity competitions.

For yet another year, the event’s increasingly popular Show and Shine will also be taking place, awarding prizes for several categories including Best Pre-50’s, Car of the Event and Bike of the Show.

A fun run, camping, Saturday night dinner, charity auction, hot laps and a Saturday dress up day also colour the weekend’s schedule, providing options for attendees looking to enhance their Leyburn experience with costumes.

More information, including tickets, a complete entry list and advice on camping at the event can be found on the Leyburn Sprints website.

The 2023 Historic Leyburn Sprints take in Leyburn on 19-20 August.
