In the lead up to the State election, Motorsport Australia has highlighted the need for New South Wales to develop a statewide motorsport strategy as a priority.
Other states have already worked with the national sporting body to develop detailed motorsport participation and infrastructure strategies to support an industry that delivers major sporting, community and economic benefits.
Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca noted that his organisation has been actively involved with various governments around the country to consider how best to invest in the sport.
“There is no doubt that a co-operative approach to understanding how motorsport can be supported is key to achieving the best outcome for the state of New South Wales,” Arocca said.
“The fact that the biggest Australian state in terms of participation has the least number of facilities cries out for a targeted strategy to ensure that the sport capitalises on the enormous popularity it is currently experiencing. We need more venues and more needs to be done to preserve those that exist.”
With respect to Wakefield Park, Motorsport Australia acknowledges the hard work of the Benalla Auto Club, the local community and many passionate members of the motorsport community as this issue continues to evolve.
Arocca also welcomed recent election commitments from the NSW State Opposition to support the return of racing to Wakefield Park.
“We have been in discussion with Julia Finn, the Shadow Minister for Sport who has pledged $1 million in funding for noise mitigation should the Labor Party in the upcoming election,” Arocca added.
“We also welcome the commitment that an elected Minns Labor Government will have the Department of Planning work with the Goulburn-Mulwaree Council and the Office of Sport on a plan to re-open Wakefield Park and, very importantly, to develop a statewide Motorsport Strategy.
“Any funding pledge for motorsport is always welcome. This commitment should be applauded and seen as particularly reassuring to the local community who rely on the facility to bring in tourism, bed nights in local hotels along with spending at local hospitality and suppliers as part of any track activity.
“We also want to congratulate those involved in the Save Wakefield Park group who until recently have been making an impact on the campaign.
“Demand for motorsport is at record levels and circuits are constantly booked out months, if not years ahead. This clearly demonstrates how important Wakefield Park is to NSW and motorsport in Australia more broadly.
“Motorsport Australia will continue to speak with all local representatives to ensure the best outcome for the motorsport community is reached. We are committed to ensuring that our sport receives the funding support it deserves from the grassroots up.”
