Super Sydney to get Supercars season underway

After what was an extremely busy off-season, the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship begins this weekend with the highly-anticipated Thrifty Sydney 500.

If the many entertaining livery reveals by teams or the spectacular Sydney Harbour Bridge crossing earlier this month wasn’t enough to get the average Supercars fans excited for the season opener, then the prospect of racing under lights at Sydney Motorsport Park will certainly do the job.

Kicking off an extended 13-round season, the first two races of the year will see the best drivers in the country do battle under the night sky on Friday and Saturday evening before wrapping up the weekend on Sunday afternoon with the third and final race.

Supercars will also look towards exciting and innovative changes coming into play for the 2025 season.

Firstly, this weekend will give all teams and drivers the opportunity to experience the new construction of Dunlop tyres in race conditions.

Secondly, this year will be the first time the season is split into three sections – the first eight rounds making up a Sprint Cup, before the two-round Endurance Cup sets up the brand new Finals system, which will ultimately come down to a four-way battle to decide the champion in Adelaide.

The Championship’s pre-season had its fair share of talking points, with the most notable move throughout the paddock being 2023 Champion Brodie Kostecki departing Erebus Motorsport for Dick Johnson Racing.

The West Australian replaces the ever-talented Anton De Pasquale, who joins former Erebus teammate David Reynolds at Team 18, while Cooper Murray fills the vacant seat left by Kostecki.

Although Murray has already made his Supercars debut, this weekend marks his first official round as a full season driver – a feat shared by Kai Allen, who joins Matthew Payne at Grove Racing.

Allen’s arrival to Grove Racing resulted in Richie Stanaway replacing the retiring Tim Slade at PremiAir Racing.

There is plenty to look forward to, with a raft of support categories also commencing their season across the Super2 Series, V8 SuperUte Series, Touring Car Masters, and Porsche Carrera Cup Australia at the Thrifty Sydney 500 on 21-23 February.
