Formula 1 – Madrid

Oscar Piastri has secured another points finish in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship, recovering to eighth at the Spanish Grand Prix at the brand-new Madring circuit.

Starting seventh on the grid, Piastri made a solid getaway before making contact with George Russell on the run to the first corner.

The pair made further contact while braking, leaving Piastri’s front wing endplate damaged.

Despite the damage, the Australian continued deep into the race before making his pit stop, rejoining the circuit in 11th position.

Piastri then worked his way back through the field during the closing stages, gaining three places to finish eighth.

The result added another four points to Piastri’s championship tally as he continued his strong run of scoring finishes throughout the season.

Kimi Antonelli took victory in Madrid, with Piastri’s McLaren teammate Lando Norris also featuring among the leading runners.

Piastri will now turn his attention to the next round of the championship, with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix to be held at Baku City Circuit from 24-26 September. The race will take place on a Saturday (local time) for the first time this season.

World Rally Championship – Chile

Taylor Gill and Daniel Brkic have continued their strong form in WRC2, finishing fourth at Rally Chile to record their second consecutive fourth-place result.

The Australians entered the event off the back of a career-best WRC result in Paraguay just two weeks earlier, with Gill building further confidence in only his second rally aboard a Škoda Fabia RS Rally2.

Gill and Brkic showed strong pace throughout the Chilean event, featuring among the leading WRC2 crews during the opening half of the rally.

Their consistent performance included several top-three stage times, before Gill’s progress was interrupted by a tyre delamination that ultimately dropped the pair to fourth.

The duo continued to push through the final stages, setting some of their best times of the rally. Across the four stages on Sunday, Gill and Brkic finished within 0.7 seconds of the fastest Rally2 car.

The result also extended Gill’s impressive finishing record, with the Australian completing all five of his WRC events in 2026 without missing a stage or severely damaging his car.

Rally Chile marked the conclusion of Gill’s expanded 2026 WRC2 campaign, which grew from an initial three-event program to five rallies.

He now turns his attention to securing further opportunities in the World Rally Championship for 2027.

Formula 3 – Madrid

James Wharton has finished his second full FIA Formula 3 Championship campaign with a podium and points finish at the season-ending round in Madrid.

The Australian started Saturday’s sprint race from reverse-grid pole after qualifying 12th, but was beaten off the line by Theophile Nael.

Wharton settled into second after an early battle at Turn 5 and maintained the position to the chequered flag, securing his second podium of the 2026 season.

Wharton’s Madrid result added to his strong Spanish campaign, having claimed his only victory of the season in the Barcelona sprint earlier in the year.

He returned to the points later on Saturday, moving from 12th to 10th in the opening feature race to collect the final point available. A seven-car incident disrupted the race, but Wharton continued to make progress through the field.

Starting 18th for Sunday’s second feature race, Wharton finished 16th as overtaking proved difficult around the new Madrid circuit.

The weekend capped an improved second full F3 season for the 20-year-old. Wharton scored points in eight races during 2026, doubling his number of scoring finishes from his first full campaign, while his 39-point tally was also an improvement on the 25 points he scored in 2025.

Much of his strongest form came late in the campaign, with Wharton scoring in four of the six races across the final three rounds.

Wharton’s 2027 plans are yet to be confirmed.

Ligier European Series – Silverstone

Alex Gardner enjoyed a strong weekend at Silverstone in the fifth round of the Ligier European Series, securing his first race victory of the campaign alongside co-driver Simon Schranz.

Competing for Team Virage in the #14 Ligier JS P4, Gardner and Schranz showed competitive pace throughout the weekend.

They finished third fastest in both of Friday’s practice sessions before qualifying seventh for Race 1 and second for Race 2.

The pair converted that pace into a fifth-place finish in the opening race before going one better in the second, taking victory to cap a consistent weekend of results.

The Silverstone performance also continued Gardner’s strong form across the championship, with the Australian and Schranz regularly featuring among the leading runners throughout the weekend.

The result provides valuable momentum heading into the final round of the 2026 Ligier European Series, with the championship set to conclude at Portugal’s Portimão circuit.

The sixth and final round will take place from 8-9 October, giving Gardner and Team Virage one final opportunity to finish the season on a high.

European Le Mans Series – Silverstone

Four Australians were in action at Silverstone for the penultimate round of the 2026 European Le Mans Series, with Griffin Peebles leading the way in the LMP2 field.

Peebles shared the #22 United Autosports Oreca with Ben Hanley and Grégoire Saucy, with the crew entering the weekend in contention for the LMP2 championship.

Starting eighth, Peebles made early progress and moved into the top three before a drive-through penalty following contact with the #35 Ultimate Ligier.

The team recovered to finish sixth overall, and third in class, securing another points finish and maintaining its championship challenge.

James Allen competed in the LMP2 Pro-Am class with Nielsen Racing in the #27 Oreca alongside Kriton Lendoudis and Alex Quinn. The crew finished 10th in class at Silverstone, adding another points result to Allen’s campaign.

In LMGT3, Tom Sargent continued his championship campaign with Proton Competition in the #75 Porsche alongside Matt Kurzejewski and Richard Lietz.

The crew finished sixth in class, leaving them in fourth in the LMGT3 standings heading into the final round.

Garnet Patterson shared the #23 United Autosports McLaren with Michael Birch and Wayne Boyd. The trio finished 9th in LMGT3 after a challenging race in wet conditions, adding another points finish to their season.

The ELMS season concludes at Portimão on 10 October.

International GT Open – Hockenheim

Christian Mansell delivered a solid performance at Hockenheimring in the latest round of the International GT Open, sharing the #71 Team Motopark Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO with German co-driver Maximilian Götz.

Mansell showed consistent pace across the weekend, recording ninth in FP1 before improving to sixth in the second practice session. He then qualified sixth for Race 1 and took the start for the opening contest.

The Australian and Götz brought the Mercedes home eighth in Race 1, adding another points finish to their campaign.

Mansell returned to qualifying duties for Race 2 and set the sixth-fastest time with a 1:37.564 lap, putting the pair in a strong position for the second race.

The result ultimately proved more challenging, with Mansell and Götz finishing 18th outright at the chequered flag.

The championship now heads to Italy for its penultimate round, with an Endurance race at Monza scheduled for 28 September.

Michelin Le Mans Cup – Silverstone

Australian drivers Georges Nakas, Fraser Ross and Jack Taylor featured in the Michelin Le Mans Cup’s Silverstone round, with Nakas and Ross securing a podium in the LMP3 Pro-Am category.

Nakas and Ross shared the #58 GG Classics entry and steadily improved throughout the weekend. After finishing 11th in the opening practice session, the pair moved to eighth in FP2 before qualifying ninth overall.

They continued that progress in the race, completing 50 laps and bringing the #58 car home third in LMP3 Pro-Am to secure a podium finish.

Taylor joined ANS Motorsport for the Silverstone round, sharing the #6 LMP3 entry with Mikkel Kristensen. The Australian recorded 17th in FP1 before making significant progress in the second practice session, setting the third-fastest time.

Taylor and Kristensen then qualified fourth in LMP3, putting them among the leading contenders heading into the race.

The pair ultimately finished 14th after 50 laps, rounding out a weekend that saw Taylor demonstrate competitive pace in his ANS Motorsport debut.

Plans are not locked in for all three drivers for the next round, however, if they all compete, the race would take place at Portimão on 10 October.

Formula Regional European Championship – Hockenheim

Alex Ninovic wrapped up his Formula Regional European Championship campaign with a strong top-five finish at the Hockenheimring, closing out the season with his best result of the weekend in Race 2.

The Rodin Motorsport driver initially placed 18th in the opening practice session before making significant progress in FP2, setting the sixth-fastest time.

Ninovic continued that improvement into qualifying, placing seventh in Group A Q1 before moving up to fourth in Q2 and securing a strong starting position for the second race.

The Australian finished 10th in Race 1 before producing his best result of the weekend in Race 2, crossing the line fifth to conclude his FREC campaign on a positive note.

Driving the #2 Rodin Motorsport car, Ninovic finished 10th in the championship standings with 64 points from the 2026 season.

Eurocup-3 – Silverstone

Gianmarco Pradel and Patrick Heuzenroeder featured strongly at Silverstone as Eurocup-3 made its first visit to the iconic British circuit for the fifth round of the 2026 season.

Pradel enjoyed a strong qualifying session, securing second place in Qualifying 2 before converting his pace into fourth in Saturday’s opening race.

The result marked a strong recovery after qualifying behind the leading group in the first session.

He backed that up with another top-10 result on Sunday, finishing eighth in Race 2 as he continued to build points in the championship.

Heuzenroeder also delivered a consistent weekend, finishing fourth in the opening test before qualifying among the leading runners. He crossed the line fifth in Race 2 after finishing near the bottom of the order in Race 1 for Griffin Core, adding another strong result to his campaign.

The Australian now sits ninth in the championship on 51 points, while Pradel is 10th on 49 points after five rounds.

The Eurocup-3 championship now heads to Spain for Round 6 at Circuito de Jerez-Ángel Nieto from 25-27 September.
