The future of Australian motorsport is shaped by the young drivers making their mark today and in previous years.

With the Motorsport Australia Young Driver of the Year Award presented by MGA Insurance, recognising those who have demonstrated exceptional talent, dedication and potential is a major award on the National Awards Gala runsheet.

Presented annually by Motorsport Australia since 2014, the award celebrates an emerging Australian driver who has achieved significant milestones in their career and shown the ability to progress to higher levels of competition, both nationally and internationally.

More than simply rewarding results, the award acknowledges the commitment, determination and natural ability required to stand out among the country’s talented group of young competitors.

It also provides an opportunity to recognise the next generation of Australian motorsport talent as they work towards achieving their ambitions across a wide range of disciplines.

To be considered, nominees must demonstrate significant career achievements to date, superior driving talent compared to their peers, and the determination to continue progressing within the sport.

Eligibility is open to drivers who hold a Motorsport Australia licence and are under the age of 22 on 1 January of the nomination year. Self-nominations are not accepted, providing an opportunity for clubs, teams, officials and others within the motorsport community to recognise deserving young competitors.

Australia has a proud history of developing young drivers who progress to the highest levels of competition.

Taylor Gill’s rise through the rally ranks to the World Rally Championship led to him receiving the award in 2022 is one example of the potential for Australian talent to make an impact on the international stage, while recent recipients include Supercars drivers Broc Feeney in 2021 and Kai Allen in 2024, as well as last year’s winner and AU4 Championship Gen1 Champion Jensen Marold.

For many young competitors, success in motorsport requires years of commitment, significant personal investment and the ability to continually improve against increasingly competitive fields.

Recognition through the award acknowledges those efforts while highlighting drivers whose achievements and attitude suggest there is more to come.

The award also serves as a reminder of the important role played by Australia’s motorsport community in developing emerging talent, from grassroots competition and karting through to national championships and international opportunities.

With nominations for the 2026 Motorsport Australia State and National Awards closing today, now is the time to recognise a young driver who has demonstrated outstanding ability, determination and the potential to achieve even greater things.
