New South Welshman Dean Amos has taken out top honours at the Eureka Landscape CAMS Queensland Hill Climb Championship after an entertaining day of action.
Behind the wheel of the Gould GR55B, Amos enjoyed a tough battle with local gun Dean Tighe and three-time CAMS Australian champion Brett Hayward, to which Amos won on his final run of the day,
Despite Amos securing the well-earned victory and being the only driver to break into the 35 second barrier mark, Tighe held the advantage for the majority of the day, posting the outright fastest time of 36.24 seconds on just his second run.
The three-way battle only lasted two runs though as Hayward failed to finish his third run of the day, ending his charge for the victory, his final run time of 36.62 seconds earning him third place outright.
Rounding out the top five was fourth placed Michael von Rappard in his Dallara Hayabusa and Firehawk pilot Edward McCane who finished half a second behind van Rappard.
While the battle taking place at the front of the field was the biggest talking point for the day, the main highlights lay in a number of class records being recorded, with Garry Ford, Phillip Dalton and Ferris Lee leaving the track with their name in the record books.
Although the trio were unable to compete for the outright title, they still highly impressed throughout the day as both Ford in Group U and Lee in PRC Rally Car claiming their records by more than one second. Dalton guided his Honda Integra to the Road Registered - Up to 2000cc class record by half a second.
With the MG Car Club of Queensland hosting the hill climb, which boasted a healthy number of 70 competitors taking on the Gramzow Road track in Mount Cotton, club president Richard Mattea was thrilled with the event.
“The hill climb was a real success and I want to thank officials, spectators and drivers for making the day possible, as well as DJR Penske’s Dick Johnson for being on hand to present trophies” Mattea said.
“We were quite fortunate the expected rain didn’t show up until right at the end but by then, with the front runners already having completed their final runs, it didn’t effect the outright winner for the day.
“We had a solid crowd over the course of the day and all of them were good spirits which made it a fantastic atmosphere.
“Congratulations to both Deans and Brett for their brilliant performances. I am really looking forward to the next one.”
