Super expectations for Mini club at Wakefield

When the Mini Car Club of New South Wales hosts the fifth round of the Zestino Tires Motorsport Australia NSW Supersprint Championship this weekend, there will be more to it than just being a simple motorsport event.
Despite entry numbers being slightly down on its usual participation rates, with just over 60 drivers scheduled to take part in the championship’s return to Wakefield Park, it’s an event that is important to all involved.
From the participants who are just raring to get some form of track time under their belts, to the hosting town of Goulburn who will enjoy the economic benefit of out of towners coming in – motorsport in these trying times enables some form of normality to these car enthusiasts.
With drivers to get a minimum of five sessions around the circuit, Mini Car Club of New South Wales President Robert Weir was pleased they were able to give their NSW based drivers a chance to compete.
“We are really proud that we are able to get out there and provide a service to the people and run an event for individuals who are really keen to participate in their hobby,” Weir said.
“There is a lot of interest around our area in motorsport which is why it’s great we can give the opportunity. We are not all Supercars drivers and paid at that level, nor are we in a position to go quarantine, so events like this are important for those who see motorsport as a hobby.
“Grassroots motorsport is the lifeblood of motorsport because it brings in more to the general economy around Australia in places like Wakefield. We travel to Goulburn, which benefits from events like this because we bring a bit of money to the area.
“We have enough officials to run the event, participation numbers are down a little but that’s the nature of the beast in the current climate and we are hoping the weather holds off because there is some rain predicted.
“At the end of the day, we are really looking forward to getting out there and running an event as it is us doing our little bit for the grassroots motorsport community."
This weekend’s Supersprint is likely to be the last event of the year for the club, with a big 2021 on the horizon, pending the further easing of restrictions.

The fifth round of the Zestino Tires Motorsport Australia NSW Supersprint Championship takes place at Wakefield Park on Sunday 18 October.
