Sensational Sandown hosts successful Historics

More than 300 cars have competed at the iconic Historic Sandown in 2018.

Historic Sandown has concluded for another year with more than 300 cars competing on the iconic circuit and a further 800 on display for motor sport fans to revel in.

It was a weekend of celebration for the popular event, which has seen historic cars put on an entertaining show on and off the track for attending fans for more than 20 years.

Headlining the 11-strong category fields was the Historic Touring Cars first division as event debutant Aldo De Paoli comfortably took out the category.

What made the sensational weekend for De Paoli even more impressive was that this year’s Historic Sandown was one of the Chevloret Camaro pilot’s first ever events.

“To win was unexpected, because it was just our second time out in the car,” De Paoli said.

“We just got the car this year and competed in Tailem Bend earlier and now we have done Sandown, so to win, we are very lucky and privileged.

“For us, it’s a real bonus to win the round.“

Other major categories in the 2018 Victorian Historic Race Registry had Nathan Blight win the hugely popular Hyundai Excels, Brian Sala the Formula 5000 and Jimmy Vernon win the Group C and A class.

Blight’s victory went down to the wire with eventual runner-up Jordyn Sinni claiming the third and final race of the weekend, following on from Blight’s two earlier victories.

Blight’s wins over Sinni in the opening two races were enough to secure the round, while three third place finishes for David Musgrave saw him round out the podium.

One of the most impressive performances of the weekend went to 2018 Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Australia regular in Vernon, with the 20-year-old picking up all three races to take out his outright category.

It was another domination in the Formula 5000s, with Sala winning all three races to take out the round ahead of Dean Camm and William Hemming.
