Emotional Lowndes bids farewell

Craig Lowndes has completed his final race as a fulltime driver for the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.

After competing in 677 races across 22-years, Craig Lowndes was given a touching send-off during his final weekend as a full-time Virgin Australia Supercars Championship driver.

With more than 150,000 fans packing out the stands across the weekend of the Newcastle 500, it was an emotional finale for Lowndes who said goodbye to the sport.

Ahead of the first race, the three-time champion completed a lap of honour before walking down pitlane through a guard of honour formed of teams and drivers.

Following the final race, the fan-favourite was allowed to complete a traditional burnout, despite not winning the race.

“It was emotional. The lead-in to the race was really special, something I’ll remember and cherish for a long time,” Lowndes said.

“To bow out of the sport on a high, and to really share the moment with everyone, to do that lap in the Commodore out of the sunroof… I haven’t heard a crowd cheer that hard in my life. That was really special.”

CAMS would like to congratulate Lowndes on a successful career at the top level in Australian motor sport and wish him all the best for his future endeavours both on and off the track.
