The CAMS Australian GT Championship season will see the arrival of the new McLaren 720S GT3 for 2019, with the car to continue an already successful Australian GT era for the manufacturer.

The stunning new McLaren won’t be a one-off, with three expected on this year’s grid. Championship regular Fraser Ross has already confirmed he will be one of the 720S drivers after campaigning last year’s season in the McLaren 650S GT3.

It was a mixed season for Ross in 2018, who led the standings at the midway point of the year before a collision in season finale saw him finish outright fifth on the standings.

With McLaren claiming an impressive 12 CAMS Australian GT titles, including an Outright-Endurance Championship double in 2016, Ross will be looking to add to that number after being impressed with his new wheels. 

“The new McLaren is a very big step forward in terms of balance and aero especially,” Ross said.

“The previous car was very pitch sensitive, this isn’t.

“This car is a lot easier to drive; it feels so much more planted on the road, better balance in the car, better feel.

“This car is massively confidence inspiring. I’m looking forward to it.”

The 720S GT3 is also part of the new wave of GT3 cars making its move onto the global market this year, after being inspired by the renowned 720S road car from the British manufacturer’s ‘Super Series’.

As expected, the 720s GT3 has similar traits to its predecessors, but will now utilise a twin-turbo alloy V8 power engine, an updated M840T 4.0-litre unit and will also feature bulk torque, making it a serious competitor for 2019 silverware. 

Ross is expected to receive the car later this month and undergo a comprehensive testing program prior to Championship’s opening round at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019.

While all eyes will be on Ross’ 720S, the second McLaren is expected to arrive mid-year, while the third McLaren to make its debut on Australian shores in 2019 will be the 570S GT4, with the car to compete in the emerging GT4 category after successful campaigns in Europe, North America and Asia.

Like the new GT3, the McLaren GT4 will see an upgrade in its modified twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 in comparison to the outgoing 650S.

The CAMS Australian GT Championship will kick off the 2019 season on 14-17 March as part of the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019.
