Melbourne teenager Oscar Piastri has enjoyed a successful two days of Formula Renault Eurocup testing at Magny-Cours after setting the pace on two of three days.
Following his move to R-ace GP in the , Piastri had a slow start to the three-day event, finishing 12th in the opening day practice time standings as drivers got behind the new Formula Renault FR-19 for the first time.
Thursday’s session saw Piastri rocket to the top of the standings, despite rainfall impacting the outright times, his time of one minute and 42 seconds was the quickest of the session.
Finishing in second, just two tenths behind the Australian, was Spaniard Sebastian Fernandez, while American Cameron Das clocked the third fastest time.
On the third and final day of testing, Piastri once again found himself topping the charts after some morning rain, in better he managed to shave five and half seconds off his time to cross the line in one minute and 36.525 seconds.
It was a strong start for Piastri, who ended the three-day testing period in outright second, Piastri has played down his speed, given it was only the first round of testing.
“Like yesterday, I think we were a bit lucky because we were one of the last to switch to the slick ,” Piastri said.
“Nevertheless, we were very quick this morning in the rain.
“These first tests have been positive. We have learned a lot, but everyone is discovering the new car and I think that we can improve in all areas leading up to the first qualifying session of the season.
“There are four more pre-season test days, a practice day and two qualifying sessions at Monza… It is a good starting point, but I am not taking anything for granted as things can change quickly.”
The field will now head to Circuit Paul Ricard next week for another two days of testing.
