Australian steps up at Albert Park
Saturday 16 March, 2019
Michael Masi will be the Race Director for the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019.
Following the tragic passing of long-time Formula 1 Race Director Charlie Whiting, an Australian has been selected to take on the high-profile role this weekend.
Former Virgin Australia Supercars Deputy Race Director Michael Masi will now perform the duties of Race Director at Albert Park throughout the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019.
CAMS President Andrew Papadopoulos congratulated Masi on his appointment, while also paying tribute to Whiting.
“Obviously the circumstances are tragic and this is not the way any of us expected this to happen, but we are very proud of Michael and offer him our full support this weekend,” Papadopoulos said.
“Charlie will be sorely missed and we are all and saddened by his sudden passing.
“Michael worked closely with Charlie throughout last year and that training was invaluable.
“Michael has also been a big part of CAMS’ training and officials’ programs, as well as taking on leading roles for Australian motor sport categories over many years.
“Together with the rest of our CAMS staff, Michael will also play a key role in the training of Vietnamese officials who will host the first ever Grand Prix in their country in 2020.”
The first race of the Formula 1 season takes place at 4.10pm (AEDT) at Albert Park on Sunday.
