Championship winner set for big return

Monday 29 April, 2019

The Kumho Tyre V8 Sleuth Touring Car Classic has welcomed its first confirmed car with the 2006 Supercars Championship winning Toll HSV Dealer Team Commodore VZ entering the inaugural event.

Now owned by Eggleston Motorsport, the former Rick Kelly driven Commodore will be in the hands of Ben Eggleston and in its original orange and black livery for the race.

Outside of being the centre of one of the most controversial Supercars finishes in title history, the car is the only one in history to win the main championship, the development series and the third-tier Kumho Series.

While the car has illustrious history with Kelly, Tony D’Alberto and Justin Ruggier all claiming silverware in it, Eggelston is no stranger to the succces either thanks to drives in the Super2 Series and Kumho V8 Touring Car Series.

Although August’s event will be Eggelston’s first drive for quite some time, the New South Welshmen is hoping to add another title to the car’s glowing trophy cabinet.

“When this event was announced I think I was probably one of the first people on the phone to find out more information,” Eggleston said.

“There’s huge interest in the 1990s and early to mid 2000s V8 Supercars and it’s a period of the sport I have very fond memories of.

“The team behind the event have the same passion and vision that I do for getting these cars out onto the track for the fans to enjoy, so I’m really happy to support them and bring the Toll car out for a run - it’s going to be a great weekend.”

The Kumho Tyre V8 Sleuth Touring Car Classic is part of the Shannons Nationals’ visit to Winton Motor Raceway in August.

The event is open to former V8 Supercars/five-litre V8 Touring Cars, two-litre Super Tourers, V8 Future Tourers and invited cars and will celebrate the history of the Australian touring cars.

As part of the Nationals, it will be streamed live and free via the Shannons Nationals website.

The Shannons Nationals at Winton takes place on 31 August – 1 September.
