The next round of the CAMS New South Wales Motor Race Championships will have extra significance when it takes place atWakefield Park later this month.
While there will be a familiar theme to the racing itself, the event will mark the 25th anniversary of the Goulburn-based circuit, which opened its doors in 1994.
Over the years, the circuit has operated as the number two circuit in NSW behind Sydney Motorsport Park, but it has always remained a key contributor to the sport in the country.
With the event taking place at the end of this month, CAMS NSW Motor race Panel chair Darren Barlow believes it’s a silver anniversary worth celebrating.
“Wakefield has been a really important venue for the growth and development of the Championship in NSW allowing all the categories to race,”Barlow explained.
“In recent years, it has hosted 50 per cent of our races and we have been coming here for the past 25 years in various guises, so it’s fantastic we get the opportunity to recognise it this way.
“The nice thing is that we will have some drivers who were there on day dot all those years ago and they will back here again to compete at the same track.”
More than 100 entries have already signed up to the Championship’s third round across nine categories, which include category staples Production Cars, Formula Vee and Sports Sedans.
“In recent times, a number of the national categories have run in conjunction with the state series, which further highlights the importance of this track,” Barlow added.
“Sports Sedans is one of those categories and they have had some tremendous fields in recent years – the category has really boosted the overall numbers here.”
As for the event itself, Barlow is expecting more people to join the ranks soon in what they hope will be a weekend full of reminiscing and acknowledgment.
“We are targeting 150 plus for this meeting which would be a nice number particularly for Wakefield. We’re expecting a lot more to join up in the coming weeks,” Barlow said.
“It’s going to be a great weekend and to top it off, we are doing a little function on the Saturday night at the Tattersalls Hotel in Goulbern.
“We will have t-shirts on sale for the event and will also celebrate all the officials and organisers for putting on the event over the years.”
Interested drivers wanting to take part in the special round have until Friday 17 May to enter the event via the competitor’s portal on the Wakefield Park website here.
The CAMS Motor Race Championship’s third round will be taking place at Wakefield Park on 25-26 May.
