The coastal town of Albany, 415 kilometres south of Perth, will become a motor sport playground over the WA day long weekend, hosting a variety of events from hill climbs, to motorkhanas, and the jewel in the crown, a street circuit race that is a re-creation of the Albany Grand Prix.
The weekend’s programme has been put together through the tireless efforts of the Vintage Sports Car Club of WA, Great Southern Street Machines and Mini Car Club of WA.
The organising committees of these clubs will be supported by more than 120 CAMS accredited officials to ensure the smooth running of the events across the weekend.
CAMS Western Australian State Chairperson Tracey Rowley says the programme of events at Albany are an integral part of the WA motorsport calendar.
“The events are always a highlight for competitors and officials. Everyone starts planning for next year only minutes after the last competitor crosses the finish line in the final event,” Rowley said.
“It’s fantastic to see the Albany events grow in popularity each year, which is a credit to the three car clubs involved and the local Albany community who are also very welcoming and supportive.”
A combined field of 250 cars are expected to take part over the weekend, representing a variety of eras from well-preserved historic vehicles to fresh off the showroom floor modern day machinery.
The weekend kicks off on Saturday 1 June, with the Mt Clarence Hill Climb (Mt Clarence), CAMS State Speed Event Series Windfarm Hillclimb (Sandpatch Rd) and the State Motorkhana Championship (CBH Mirambeena).
On Sunday, the central streets of Albany will be transformed into a street circuit for the Triple M Albany Classic. This event has run since 1936 and remains one of the only ‘around the houses’ motor sport events in Australia. Not all the action will be on the track, with plenty of family entertainment on offer near the Albany Visitor’s Centre.
CAMS Speed Event Series competitors are treated to two rounds in the programme, and will line up on Monday for their final round of the weekend - the SRT Sprint at the Pendeen Industrial Estate.
The event programme runs from 1 - 3 June with entry to the Albany Classic available at $15 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, $35 for families and free for children under the age of 12. All other events are free to spectate.
For those who aren’t content spectating, organisers are still taking entries for the Speed Event Series and Motorkhana events. These events are open to vehicles of all types.
